Dan Murrell Reports on Greater Memphis Foundation
Today, Union City Rotarians welcome Dan Murrell, Director of Development with the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis. Dan is also a member and Secretary of the Memphis Rotary Club. “Strengthening our community through philanthropy,” is the underlying theme of CFGM—a program that’s been operating for over 35 years, having raised more than $280 million. CFGM ranks in the top seven percent of Community Foundations nationally in terms of assets and the amount of money given away in grants. Last year, the agency raised $36 million. In 2005, more than 6,000 grants were awarded. The goal of the Community Foundation is to build a stronger community by investing in the capabilities of individuals, organizations and institutions so as to contribute to the neighborhoods and communities in which they are located. Welcome to Union City Dan Murrell!
Jim Rippy, Jr. to Report on OC Economic Development
Next week, longtime community leader and fellow Rotarian Jim Rippy, Jr. will make a report on the efforts and activities of the Obion County Joint Economic Development Council for the past two years and follow up with his expectations for 2007! Rippy will discuss any number of issues next week, including plans to enhance Everett Stewart Airport and turn it into a regional airport with help from Weakley County, housing issues in the community, the scope of Obion County’s industrial development and jobs-creation efforts, highway projects in the works, the status and impact of I-69, marketing projects for the community, tourism, retain development, and the new Cates Landing Riverport in Lake County. Rippy will also discuss obstacles we will have to overcome in order to be successful in our economic development initiatives. See You next week! Coach Bret Campbell Touts UTM Hoops Team
Last week, Rotarians heard from UTM Men’s Basketball Coach Bret Campbell, on what has been a tough season so far in the very competitive Ohio Valley Conference. Interestingly enough, it was a pretty exciting week for UTM athletics as former football player Jerry Reese (of Tiptonville) was named General Manager for the New York Giants NFL team and former UTM assistant football coach Mike Tomlin was named Head Coach for the Pittsburg Steelers. Most recently, Mike had served as the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. He served under Jim Marshall while at UTM during the 1997 season. Last week’s program started with another sizzling roast of one of our new Rotarians—Chuck Doss. Mike Cox served as grand roaster and apparently left no stone unturned in his Doss Dicing. Coach Campbell, now in his eighth year at UTM, acknowledged his team’s slow start when eleven of the first sixteen games were played on the road, but hoped for a turnaround down the stretch and possibly a berth in the OVC Tourney at season’s end. The Skyhawks boast six Seniors this year—all of whom will graduate in May. He said UTM athletes have a 2.9 GPA as compared to the general student population’s 2.8 GPA. Campbell admitted his team was having a difficult time adjusting to the losses of seniors Jared Newsome and Jeremy Kelly from last year’s team. “The OVC is a very good basketball league and we certainly appreciate all the support we get from Union City,” Campbell said. “Union City is a big part of UTM and we’ll all exciting about having former UC star Marquis Weddle in a Skyhawk uniform next season.” The UTM Skyhawks (women and men) are back in action at the Elam Center tomorrow afternoon and evening, hosting Jacksonville State.
