Friday, February 9, 2007 - Kay Wilkes to Address Rotary on Workplace Differences in the Sexes

Kay Wilkes On Workplace Personality Differences

Today, Union City Rotarians will enjoy a program on Workplace Personality Differences Among the Sexes from Kay Wilkes, a multifaceted healthcare professional with over 30 years clinical experience in both acute and long-term care.
This will be a program where we learn the basic differences between men and women—and why we form attitudes about whom we do and don’t like at work!
Kay is the wife of Ben Wilkes and mother of Abbey, Benjamin, Bonnie and Peter Wilkes.  Kay manages her own consulting company offering practical solutions for long term care through training and consultation to help teach her clients to “work smarter—not harder” while “having fun in the workplace.”
Kay is a member of the Tennessee Speakers Association and the National Speakers Association and has entertained audiences across America with her humorous and simplistic approach to excellence in the workplace.  Welcome to Rotary Kay Wilkes!

Next week, Rotarians will enjoy a visit from former Union City Rotarian, Randy Phillips, Senior Associate Vice President and Director of Research at Union University in Jackson.
Randy is in charge of supervising and advancing University-wide undergraduate and graduate research initiatives.  He teaches graduate research methods courses and serves on the University’s Institutional Review Board (for the protection of human subjects).
Randy Phillips career boasts of twenty-five years of professionalism demonstrated in human service, business, higher education, community involvement and professional associations. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy, Rehabilitation, from SIU-Carbondale, a Masters of Arts in Marriage, Family and Child Therapy and a BS Degree in Psychology from Union.
It’ll be great to see Randy next Friday!

Jim Rippy, Jr. Reports on OC Economic Development

     Last week,
Rotarians heard from Obion County Joint Economic Development Council President Jim Rippy, Jr. on ongoing efforts to promote the community, recruit new industrial and retail opportunities, and deal with such other important matters as infrastructure, housing, tourism, and overall economic development.
“There are many things going on in our community, but we still have several situations that are unique to us that we must overcome,” Rippy said. “Because we are such a sparsely populated area, we must engage in self-promotion. Because Obion County is an agricultural-area, we have trouble acquiring land for industrial projects and road construction. We’re not a media center. We need a Public Relations person to help us tell our story to other parts of the state.  We are unknown and we need to become known.”
Rippy noted that Tennessee was the “fifth best state for industry to locate in” but still, other states are offering huge incentives to try and land the same industries we are going after.
“It gets tougher and tougher to recruit,” Rippy said. “If you don’t have a Megasite on the table, you won’t get one of the huge automobile plants.”
Rippy told how local leaders came together and put together plans to build a new spec building in a new industrial park—a project will hopefully result in new jobs for our community before the year is up. He mentioned plans to start letting contracts for I-69 before the year is over and said the OCJEDC has sent teams to various retail conferences in search of new potential businesses for the community.
“Our population has not grown in thirty years,” Rippy noted. “We have teamed with Weakley County to convert Everett Stewart Airport into a “regional airport” that will enhance our recruitment capabilities and we know there will be a positive impact from the Riverport project in Lake County.”
Jim thanks for a great update on where we have been, where we are, and where we’re headed with economic development initiatives for Obion County!
