2007 Farm Day Program Features Dr. Jim Byford

Next week, Rotarians will stage their annual Farm Day Program—saluting area farmers and ag-related businessmen who make farming and agriculture one of Obion County’s top industries.
Dr. Jim Byford, Professor and Dean of the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences at UT-Martin, will be our guest speaker.  Dr. Byford received his B.S. degree from UTM in 1966. He received a Ph. D. from Auburn in 1970, majoring in wildlife biology with minors in forest ecology and fisheries biology. He has served as Dean at UTM for the past 17 years and has been with the UT system for 33 years.  His scholarly interests include natural resource conservation and management, conservation and education, deer management, wildlife biology and biofuel technology development.
In 2002, there were 700 farms in Obion County producing $62 million in crops and livestock!

Wilkes Tells Rotarians About Workplace Personalities

Last week, Rotarians heard from motivational speaker and nursing home consultant Kay Wilkes on the many issues at play in the workplace—especially as they relate between the sexes and among peers.
“It’s all about the people.” Kay started. “The fact is, we will pay more for something from someone we like than we will from someone we don’t like.  Success in the workplace is all about effective communications.”
Kay boiled her arguments down to a few basic truths.
“History is the best predictor of the future and it seems only logical that if you are in a position to hire, you should do whatever it takes to know the personalities of the people you hire,” she said. “When we take a personality test ourselves, we usually do a poor job of defining our own strengths while we are pretty good at picking out our weaknesses.”
Kay said you should be aware that workplace personalities are affected by many things, including you sex, your birth order, you school encounters, and yes, even you job impacts how you will react to workplace issues.
Some of the adjectives used to describe various types of workplace personalities included persuasive, confident, abrasive, organized, fair, sensitive, caring, by the book, arrogant, perfectionist, exacting, helpful and cooperative.
Kay, who lives in Union City with her husband, Ben, is the mother of Abbey, Benjamin, Bonnie and Peter Wilkes.  She has over 30 years of clinical and professional consulting experience in both acute and long-term health care industries.
Thanks Kay for an entertaining program.
