Friday, June 1, 2007 - Don Hutson to Discuss BMH-UC and It's Focus on Heath Care
Don Hutson Reports on Healthcare Focus of BMH -UC
Today, Rotarians welcome fellow Rotarian Don Hutson, Administrator and CEO of Union City Baptist Memorial Hospital, who will discuss how the local hospital maintains its community focus through collaboration, commitment and continuous improvement. Don will describe the magnitude to which the hospital affects our personal lives and the area’s economy. Hutson joined BMH-UC upon his retirement at a lieutenant colonel in the U. S. Army in 2006. He has served in healthcare administration roles in hospitals, regional healthcare contracting offices and field medical units for more than 20 years. Don holds degrees from Ole Miss and Baylor University and most recently served as commander for administration of Winn Army Community Hospital at Fort Stewart, GA. Welcome Don!
Weakley County Juvenile Judge Jim Bradberry
Next week, our guest speaker will be Weakley County Juvenile Judge Jim Bradberry, who has overcome the disability of blindness to have a successful 27-year legal career as lawyer and judge. Judge Bradberry will speak specifically next week about “Families in Crisis—a View From the Bench.” Judge Bradberry…and yes, he is related to Sam…is a graduate of Gleason High School and Michigan State University. He earned his law degree from Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan. He resides in Dresden with his 11-year old grandson. Rotary Exchange Student Hailey Fishel to Visit Also Next Week, Rotarians will hear from Rotary Exchange Student Hailey Fishel, who will visit Sweden in the coming weeks as part of RI’s outstanding exchange program. Another student, Rachel Triplett, is Italy-bound!
Verhine Scholarships Awarded to 117 Students
Last week, the Union City Rotary Club staged its 6th Annual Verhine Scholarship Program—awarding $172,500 to 117 former UCHS graduates who are currently enrolled in colleges and universities throughout the region. The scholarships, which ranged in size from $1,000 to $2,500 per student, bring to $319,000 to total amount of scholarships awarded during a three-week period this year by the Rotary Club. That’s roughly $4 million in scholarships the Rotary Club has awarded since 1982. The Verhine Scholarships are endowed by a $3.5 million donation from the Vern and Fern Verhine estate. The Verhines were longtime Union City businesspeople who had no children of their own and looked for ways to “give back” to the community they loved. During last week’s program, vice president Barry Keathley read the names of the students, who in turn rose to tell where they were attending school and their area of study. Congratulations to Roger Williams and his Scholarship Committee on a great year and thanks to all who made contributions and took part in the many aspects to the program. It’s phenomenal that a club our size can generate and administer a program of this magnitude year after year. Another special word of thanks goes to Art Sparks, Al Creswell, Craig Atwill and Phillip Creswell and the folks at ATA Accounting for handling the scholarships and making sure they get to the right students. Chairman Williams and President Steve Goodrich urged the students to make the most of their opportunities and, if possible, return to the Obion County area after graduation to settle down and raise their families. They were also encouraged to make sure they helped future students with contributions to scholarship programs similar to what we have here in the Rotary Club
