Friday, June 15, 2007 - Ashton Jennings to speak to Rotarians about life as an entrepreneur

Ashton Jennings, a Home-Grown Entrepreneur

Today, the Union City Rotary Club is proud to welcome 23-year old Ashton Jennings, president and founder of Field of Steel, and operations manager of Premier Racing, Inc.  Ashton , who now lives in Huntersville, N.C., is the son of G.T. and Linda Jennings, and is the grandson of Leon “Shine” Jessup and (the late) Aurelia Jessup of Union City.  Ashton’s brother, Andrew, the corporate account executive at Nashville Super Speedway, couldn’t be with us today.  Andrew is 23, and resides in Nashville.

Ashton and his family transferred from Union City to Akron with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company when he was four months old.  G.T. was in charge of racing tires for Goodyear at the time.  At the age of two, Shine built Ashton a race car bed and from that day forward, young Ashton was hooked on “Motor Sports.”  Ashton developed his competitive and leadership qualities during his growing-up years, competing in such sports as baseball, football, lacrosse, basketball and soccer. After graduating high school, Ashton attended Ole Miss, graduating with a double-major in political science and history.  He also earned a minor in French.  Ashton studied abroad by attending the International School of Language in Cannes, France.

With family support, Ashton carried his love for sports into the workplace by forming Premier Racing, Inc. in 2004. He headquartered the company in Charlotte, N.C.—the heart of NASCAR racing.  In 2006, Ashton formed his second company—Field of Steel, LLC.  Just last week, Field of Steel hosted the largest motor-bike rally and Freedom Fest in North Carolina.   The focus of Ashton’s talk today will be the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and how it is to start not one, but two, companies this day and age.

Rotary salutes Ashton on his accomplishments and welcomes him and his family to Rotary!

Youth Town’s Bill Page with Update

Next week, Rotarians will hear from Bill Page, marketing development representative for Youth Town, located in Pinson, Tn.
Youth Town, now in its 45th year of existence, is designed for boys ages 12 through 17 to get them “back on target” for a productive life.
Youth Town counsels youths going through alcohol and drug addictions and various types of behavioral problems.

Families in Crisis—A View From the Bench

Last week, Rotarians heard from Weakley County Juvenile Judge Jim Bradberry, whose 27 year legal career has been a first-hand witness to a moral decay in this country and decline in the family institution.
He cited increases in family violence cases, divorces, custody hearings, juvenile crime, illegitimate births, and a true lack of commitment in many of today’s relationships.
“It’s merely a social construct of convenience,” Judge Bradberry said of today’s trend of cohabitation between men and women living together outside a formal marriage.  “We don’t hold marriage in a very high regard anymore.  Children are often the ones that suffer.”
Judge Bradberry closed his provocative talk by fielding questions and urging all of us to “set better examples” for our young people.
