Friday, June 29, 2007 - Kris Moore reports on Behavorial HealthCare Center in Martin

Kris Moore Reports On Behavioral HealthCare

Today, Rotarians will hear an update from Kris Moore on the work of the Behavioral HealthCare Center in Martin.
Last week’s program focused on the needs of troubled teens in West Tennessee and today’s focus will be brain diseases and illnesses that afflict our senior adults.
Kris Moore is the Community Education Director for Behavioral HealthCare Center, located at 458 Hannings Lane in Martin.
There is no question that the aging of Americans will have a profound impact on individuals, families and U.S. society in the years to come.  BHC-M is a free-standing, 16-bed geriatric treatment hospital that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases and mental illnesses among the elderly population.
Having opened in 2005, BHC-M is an inpatient facility designed to provide 24-hour nursing, psychiatric and physician care as well as crisis intervention/stabilization services. The facility uses the talents of a psychiatrist, physician, a certified geriatric nurse practitioner and various specialists.  Welcome Kris Moore!

Rotary Installation Day In One Week

Next week, the Union City Rotary Club says “Out with the Old and In with the New” as we conduct our annual Installation Day Program.
The highlight of the program will be watching outgoing president Steve Goodrich turn the reigns of power over to our incoming president, Barry Keathley, who on behalf of all Rotarians, will say “thanks” to President Goodrich for his excellent year of leadership and accomplishments.
Other leadership changes coming next week include Steve Conley’s rise to president-elect and Randy Barnes’ hike to secretary.  Gary Houston becomes sergeant-at-arms while Al Creswell will be installed as ascending director.
Directors for the coming year will be Jody Kizer and Jim Bondurant.  President Goodrich becomes past-president and a member of the board of directors.
Let’s all get on board the Rotary bandwagon as we begin a new year and give incoming president Keathley a strong showing and word of encouragement as he takes over the leadership position in Union City Rotary!

Youth Town Still in the Business of Changing Lives

Last week, Rotarians heard from Larry Warren, concerning Youth Town’s first 45 years of service to troubled teens and their families from West Tennessee and bold predictions for the future.
Warren, the Director of Operations and Personnel at YT, located on a sprawling 250-acre campus south of Jackson, opened his talk by asking Rotarians, “How many of you are related to someone, or know of someone, who has been addicted to drugs or alcohol?”
After several hands went up, Warren, whose father was an alcoholic, noted that the United States has four percent of the world’s population, yet 67 percent of its drug and alcohol addicts.
“This past week, we treated a 13-year old boy from Obion County, who is already addicted to drugs,” Warren noted. “Meth is fast becoming a very dangerous drug of choice in America.  It can become addictive after just one use.”
Larry presented a slide program depicting Youth Town as the “best kept secret in Tennessee.”
He spoke of the several programs now being offered at Youth Town, including River Quest, Youth Challenge, George Thomas, Jr. Academy, and Life Coaching—programs designed to help teach discipline, positive self-esteem, leadership, life lessons and social skills.
Youth Town is currently enjoying an 85 percent success rate for helping troubled teens overcome their addictions—a process that takes 90-120 days to complete.  The meeting ended with the Rotary Board being encouraged at considering a donation to Youth Town from Union City Rotary.
Thanks Larry for an informative talk.
