Friday, August 31, 2007 - Reelfoot Lake history and archeology to be Discussed
Bill Lawrence on History and Archeology of Reelfoot Lake
Today, Rotarians welcome Bill Lawrence, a Union City native with the Dept. of Environment and Conservation to discuss the pre-history and archeology of legendary Reelfoot Lake. —our hunting and fishing paradise that attracts visitors year-round. Bill conducts numerous workshops on the lake and its basin throughout the year. He is employed by the Tennessee Dept. of Environment and Conservation is also an Adjunct Professor at UT Martin. Somewhere between myth and history lies the answer of the creation of Reelfoot Lake. Area folklore says the lake came to be as a result of an irate Indian medicine man. History credits an earthquake along the New Madrid Fault in 1811 for creating the historic cite as the Mississippi River “flowed backwards.” The lake features more than fifty species of fish, including the “big three” of Crappie, Bass and Bluegill. Welcome Bill to Rotary!
OC Corn Fest and West Tennessee Outdoors Youth Jamboree Coming
Next week, Rotarians will hear details of the First Obion County Corn Festival (formerly known as Fall Fest) from Lynn Glover and Glenda Chrisp while Rob Somerville will be here to discuss the West Tennessee Outdoors Youth Jamboree, coming up Saturday, Sept 15th, at the Ned McWherter Pavilion at UT-Martin. Corn Fest starts Monday with the Goodyear Car Show on the sprawling south lawn of the local tire manufacturing plant and continues throughout September with numerous events, including the Craig Morgan concert, beauty pageants, a CornFest “Idol” Contest, Pride of Obion County Awards Luncheon, JA Kids in the Park, CornFest Parade, Tennis Tournament, Art in the Park, Chalk Art Contest, Tennis Tournament, a breakfast to honor First Responders in Obion County, and many more events. The Youth Jamboree started out with 60 kids and grew to 2,500 last year. Coach Fishel Previews UCHS Football Season
Last week, Rotarians heard from UCHS football coach Jimmy Fishel, who begins his fifth season at the helm of the Golden Tornado program tonight in Martin. The Tornadoes posted a 6-5 worksheet last year, which included a forfeit win over Milan and a season-ending loss to eventual state champions, JCS, in the first round of the TSSAA playoffs. “This year, our off-season goal was to refocus our attention on learning how to compete at our level of play,” Fishel said. “We want to develop a new attitude with out defense and return to the ‘swagger’ UCHS football once had. We had a lots of conversation about leadership and how to create leaders on our team.” Joining Coach Fishel for his visit were his sernior players and cheerleaders and flag girls and Water Girls—something they didn’t have in Robert Kirkland’s day! Senior players on hand last week were Scott Huff, Pat Polk, Brett White, Taylor Bruff, Barrett Tanner, Darrin Dickerson, Ian Garrigan, Zack Autry, Hunter Cash, Jamar Harris and Will Townes. Fishel introduced his coaching staff, which includes returning coaches David Barker, Mack Moore and Tracy Bruff and newcomers Tony Butler and Derrick Pritchard. Coach Fishel thanked Rotarians for supporting his program and the kids who participate in football, band and cheerleading at UCHS. “Without you, we really wouldn’t have a football program in Union City,” Fishel noted, as he encouraged Rotarians to come to the games, pat the kids on the back, and say something encouraging about the program throughout the season.
