Congressman John Tanner Visits Home Club
Today, Rotarians welcome Congressman John Tanner to speak to his home club about matters of world interest –in particular, the war in Iraq, now that Gen. Petraeus has made his much-anticipated report to Congess Congressman Tanner has represented Tennessee’s 8th District in West and Middle Tennessee since 1989and serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. As co-founder of a group of moderate to conservative democrats known as the Blue Dog Coalition, he is considered a leader in the fight to eliminate the $8.7 trillion federal debt. He chairs the U.S. Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, the civilian arm of the NATO alliance. John and wife, Betty Ann, live in Union City and have two children and three grandchildren. Dr. Shirley Raines Here Next Week.
Next week, Rotarians will hear from Dr. Shirley C. Raines, president of the University of Memphis and former president of the Memphis Chamber o f Commerce. Dr. Raines became the 11th president of the the University of Memphis on July 1, 2001. She is the first woman to hold the presidencecy of the university, which was founded in 1912. Dr. Raines earned her doctorate in education and her master of science degree from UT Knoxville. Her bachelor or science degree is from UT Martin. She also completed the management development program the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Before her appointment at Memphis, Dr. Raines was vice chancellor for academic Services and Dean of the college of education at the University of Kentucky. Last week, we were treated to a double-headder program as ynn Glover, President of Corn Fest, and Robin Wood, vice president, explained the rundown of events for the Corn Fest Celebration that beganLabor Day with the Goodyear Car Show and runs through Saturday, September 29, closing with the Craig Morgan country music concert. Lynn’s enthusiastic presentation made even the “Bed Race” sound interesting. Many of the traditional events from Fall Fest are being recast to promote the Corn Fest theme. There is the Miss CornFest Tennessee Scholarship Pageant, the CornFest “Idol” Contest, Tennis Tournament andParade. Aamong other things, there will be a barbeque contest, a Bean/Cornbread Cookoff, a corn beating and shucking ontest, and the popular Magnificent Imposters competition, now called the Corn Flakes competition. The second half of last week’s double-header program featured comments on the West Tennessee Youth Outdoor Jamboree, coming up Sept 15 (tomorrow) from 7-4, at the Ned McWherter Ag Pavilion at UTM. Rob Somerville has been organizing the event for the past 11 years. Sixty percent of last year’s participants were females.
