Labor Czar Neeley Visits Rotary, Recognizes Jiffy Steamer for Safety Achievements
Last week, James G. Neeley, Tennessee’s Chief Labor Manager, spoke to a keenly interested group of Rotarians about changes to the state’s workers’ compensation laws and how they have saved Tennessee businesses thousands of dollars in a very short time.
Obion County industrial recruitment guru Jim Cooper, who has known Neeley for the past twenty years, introduced Neeley, calling him “a friend to rural West Tennessee.”
Neeley said October 2nd was a “grand day in Obion County with the safety ceremony we were able to conduct at Jiffy Steamer. Congratulations to Bill Simrell and Clint Joiner.”
During his visit to Union City last week, Commissioner Neeley was able to meet with several plant managers and company officials to get a good feel of industry’s needs and concerns.
Neeley said there was a dramatic need for welders and other skilled and trained personnel starting to appear all across Tennessee. He said since every child is not college material, and it is important that Tennessee developed true job paths for all skilled trades. Thanks to all who helped arrange Neeley’s Visit.

Rufus Clifford Visits Rotary
Today, the Union City Rotary Club is pleased to welcome our 6760 District Governor, Rufus Clifford to our club for his official visit to Union City. Governor Clifford will use the visit to express his goals and objectives for the Rotary year that began July 1.
As you know, ‘Rotary Shares” is the theme of the current Rotary year, as selected by our International President, Wilfrid J. Wilkinson.
A native Tennessean, Governor Clifford was born in Bedford County, where his father was a Church of Christ evangelist. Rufus graduated from Lawrence County High School in Lawrenceburg and after attending David Lipscomb College and UT Knoxville, he graduated from LIT Medical School in Memphis in March 1959. He served as a flight surgeon in the Air Force with the rank of Captain and then completed a residency at Maury Regional Hospital.

Union City High School Ready
For Some Basketball
After falling just short in bids last winter to advance to the Girls and Boys Sub-State games in Tennessee, the Union City High School girls and boys basketball teams are ready to tip off the 2008 season. Coaches Jeff Chandler and Shane Sisco will visit Rotary next week to report on this year’s teams and upcoming seasons.
Coach Chandler, who has guided the UC Lady Tornadoes to the best turn-around of any high school basketball program in West Tennessee in recent months—including an 18-12 record and trip to the Regional Semis last year. This will be Chandler’s 5th year as head coach. Most noticeably absent from last years’ team will be seniors DeBrisha Robinson and Brittany Taylor and Junior Labrica Ward.
Shane Sisco returns for his 9th year as head boys coach, after finishing 30-4 last year, falling to Humboldt in the Regional Semis. Jeremy Simpson is the only graduate lost from last year’s team. Mr. Basketball candidate M.J Brown returns for his senior year.
