Next week, the Union City 2008, TSSAA Class A State Boys Basketball Team will visit Rotary. They bring a excellent record with them, going 37-0 this season, winning the District 14 a Championship, Region 7A Championship and the State Crown. The UC team is just the 15th boy’s basketball team to complete a perfect season in Tennessee.

Coach Shane Sisco completed his ninth season at UC. His overall record with the Twisters in 224-64. The State Championship was his second in three years and fifth overall for his family at UC. His father Marty had three State Championships as Twister’s coach (1990-92-97).

MJ brown won the Class A Mr. Basketball award for the second straight season. He was also named to the Tennessee Sports Writers association (TSWA) All-State team for a second straight year.

At the state tournament, Brown was named the Class A state tournament MVP with teammates Tony Wilkins and Andre Coby joining him on the All-State Tournament team.

Last week, Dr. Jason Woods presented a practical program concerning the disease of pulmonary Emphysema. You will find that this disease develops in those who are smokers, although 10% of those with Empysema are non-smokers. Dr. Woods shared with the club the procedure he uses to measure the collateral ventilation of the lungs. This technique uses hyperpolaarized3He gas to find where trapped gas in the lungs exists and where intervention (stents and one-way exit valves) might need to take place. 3He MRIs are a huge breakthrough in visualizing lung ventilation and collateral pathways. Dr. Woods used a power-point presentation to explain this procedure to our Rotary Club. There will be a test next week to determine who was REALLY listening to Dr Wood’s comments. Our thanks to Jason for taking the time to speak to our club an give us insight into his research and work.

Also-- we have had 2 visiting Rotarians from Waverly, Ohio visiting with us over the past 2 months. They are about to leave to return home and left the following Thank-you note to us last Friday.

"We would like to express our thanks to the Rotary Club of Union City for your 9 weeks of Rotary friendship. We appreciate your hospitality and now Cay can say she’s been the first female Rotarian in the Union City Club!"

Best wishes from the Roberts;

Dick and Cay Roberts
