Today, Larry Vernon, Sensei, and his Shotokan Karate Academy will provide us with a brief explanation and class demonstration on principles of ‘traditional karate’.
In 1982 Larry began instructing karate here in Union City. He has earned his 1st and 2nd Black Belt Degrees as far away as Honolulu Hawaii and Birmingham, AL. He is also a member of United Shotakan Karate Federation of Memphis and JKA/AAkf of Los Angeles, California.
His classes are for children eight years old and older, and his philosophy is "to teach a very traditional form of Japanese karate known worldwide as ‘Shotokan’. Our purpose is to develop the character of the student through repetition and hard work" he says.
"Some basic characteristics of a Shotokan karate student are: good character - being committed - non quitting attitude - respect for others and self - patience - self control / discipline and responsibility", he said.
Larry and his wife Beverly have been married 31 years, they have 3 grown children and 1 grandchild. He has owned his own business here in Union City for the past eleven years and has had his Karate Class here in Union City for 26 years.Welcome Larry and Students!
Next week, Will be another big event, as Union City Rotary will have it’s first annual club-wide business meeting. There will be several very important issues to be discussed and every member is urged to make every effort to be present at next Friday’s meeting.
If you have any items of concern that you would like to bring before the club, please contact Steve Conley sometime early next week and you will be added to the agenda.
There are "Paul Harris" awards to be presented during this session.
The board is meeting sometime early next week to prepare an agenda and the order of the meeting. So again you are urged to make a special effort to be present, because your input at this meeting is very important.
Last Week, was Verhine Scholarship Day here at the Hampton Center. There were several guests on hand along with guest speaker retired Political Science Professor Dr. Richard Chesteen.
The Scholarship Program began by Roger Williams recognizing the Verhine Scholarship Committee consisting of Steve Vaughn, Ron Green, Newel Graham, Bob Regen, Clint Joiner, Dave Schlager and David Johnson.
Roger then went on to explain to the the guests the origin of the funds which make the Verhine Scholarships available. He also said that the Union City Rotary Club today would hand out $168,000.00, in scholarship funds, bringing the total of funds the club had dispersed to students over the years to $3,276,000.00.
He then reminded Students and Rotarians that June 6 was a very important day in history as it marked the 53rd anniversary of "D-Day" and went on to recognize "WW II" Veterans in the audience.
Gary Houston was then called on to introduce the Guest Speaker Dr. Richard Chesteen. Richard’s speech was titled "A Hero’s Journey In A Troubled World". He began his talk by praising the generosity of the people of the community and county in which we live. He went on to advise the students present of the importance of the help they were receiving from our club and how those funds could help keep them from being so very far in debt at the end of their college career.
He spoke to the young people on hand about the trying times our nation is going through at the present time and let them know that this nation has always been in trying times as a growing nation since 1776 and has always grown out of it’s problems. He reminded them of the Cold War period in the 1960’s, and how the entire nation prepared itself for a war that could possibly be fought on it’s home front. He also touched on the segregation times in the 60’s and how the nation handled that crisis. He used these examples as a reference to show the young audience that even though we are in trying times they can always expect this nation to repair itself.

An old Farmer was out working on his fences when a government official drove up and presented him with an I.D. Card and said he was a Federal Water Inspector and needed to inspect his water allotment. The farmer said OK but don’t go into that field over there. The inspector informed him that that card allowed him to go wherever he please on the farm and he could no nothing about it. Again the farmer said OK. A few minutes later the farmer heard the man screaming and looked up and saw his bull chasing the man and gaining on every step. He promptly threw down his tools and ran to the fence and yelled, "Your Card man Show him your card"!!
