Today, marks another first for Union City Rotary, as we have our "open forum club meeting".
The highlight of today’s meeting will be the recognition of "Paul Harris Fellows". This is the most prestigious award our club can bestow on a member. Art Sparks will do the honors, and and a hearty congratulations to the recipients.
The first Paul Harris Fellow was presented in 1957, and in early June 2006 one individual in every Rotary zone was identified to represent the one millionth Paul Harris Fellow. The achievement of the one millionth Paul Harris Fellow milestone is represented by over $1 billion that has been contributed to projects aimed ad doing good in the world.
Also on today’s agenda, Roger Williams will address the club concerning the scholarship committee and changes he would like to see in the up-coming year.
Incoming President Elect Randy Barnes has asked to address the club and discuss the coming year in Union City Rotary.
There will also be a session of the meeting for an open-floor discussion form any member present who would like to be recognized and address the club on any Rotary concern or suggestion.
Next week, Union City Rotary will see the "Changing of the Guard" as we install our new 2008 - 2009 Officers on our annual Installation Day Program.
We will all witness the "Main Event" as outgoing president Barry Keathley turns over the gong to incoming president, Steve Conley.
Steve along with all Union City Rotarians will say a "hearty thanks" to President Keathley for his excellent leadership and accomplishments over the past year.
Other offices changing hands next week will see Randy Barnes become president-elect, Gary Houston becoming secretary, Al Creswell will step into the sergeant-at-arms position, ascending director handed over to Jody Kizer, Jim Bondurant will rotate off, and President Keathley will of course become past president and member of the board of directors, with one directors position to be filled.
Let’s all make a commitment this next year to make incoming president, Steve Conley’s year at the helm one of the most successful in Union City Rotary’s history.
Last Week, Rotarians and several guests were entertained by Fellow Rotarian Larry Vernon and his Shotokan Karate Academy Students. He an his class put on a very impressive demonstration of offensive and defensive moves which the art of karate teaches. There were several words and expressions used that this person would never try to spell or even duplicate.
Before the demonstration began, Larry spoke to us from the podium. He said he had 30 students in his program, ranging for the age of 8 years old and above with a waiting list of at least 30 or more to join the program. He informed us that he starts his students with a six month introductory program, studying their motor skills and attitudes and some of his students have been in this program upwards of seven years.
Larry also explained the different color belts the students were wearing, saying the different colors signified the ranking of that particular student and how much training and experience they had, with belt ranking coming every 6 months to a year depending on your current ranking. Each student on average will put in 600 to 700 hours of training going from white belt, (lowest rank) to black belt, (highest rank) participating in two classes per week. He mentioned the extra activities of the children today as compared to just a few years ago. A few years ago his students had only baseball to interfere with the classes he taught, now his students have to be very dedicated to stay in the program and play all the extra sports offered to them in present times.
He said "the purpose of karate is a type of defense mechanism, not an art to conquer others but to conquer the weakness in one’s self".
Larry also mentioned the fund raisers the students have, with all funds raised being turned over to A.L.S Foundation, Walk of Hope, or Chimes for Charity, this year alone they raised over $4,300.00

The answer to this riddle is upside down in this column, please do not look at the answer until you have studied the next paragraph very carefully! It should sharpen those genes in your brain and stall alzheimer’s for years!
This is an unusual paragraph. I’m curious as to just how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It looks so ordinary and plain that you would think nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is highly unusual though. Study it and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out. Try to do so without any coaching!
Answer - The letter e, which is the most common letter used in the English language, does not appear even one in the paragraph.
