ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT 6760

District Governor                                                                                            International President

Larry Boyd                                                                                                   Dong Kurn Lee

Brentwood, Tennessee                                                                                     Seoul, Korea

Today, Ron Green and Clay Woods entertain us with a group of kids from the Boys & Girls Club of Northwest Tennessee.

This club has a brief but impressive history, it began three years and eight months ago, and has over 1,200 registered young people between the ages of 6-18.

Today, the Boy’s & Girls Club of Northwest Tennessee has become one of the leading youth service organizations in our State.

Through the year, the dedication of the Board of Directors and Employees has been the key to the successful growth experienced by the Club. By consistently planning for the future needs and expected growth of the organization, the Organization has plans to increase the number of services and locations to the youth of Northwest Tennessee.

"It takes on average, about $500.00 per youth per year to run the club, but compared to the cost of keeping a young adult in jail, this is one of the best bargains in America", Ron said.

He also said that less than 10% of the funding comes from United Way. This means that funding from Individuals, corporations and foundations are critical to insure a continued youth development strategy, and .80 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to children’s services.

"Our mission is to inspire and enable all young people; especially those who need us the most to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens", he said.

Next week, 77th District State Representative Phillip Pinion will address Union City Rotary for the last time in that capacity, as Phillip has elected not to run for another term for State Representative.

He has held the seat for our District since 1988, being elected to take the place of now Congressman John Tanner, after his successful bid to represent the 8th District in Washington DC

Pinion is a member of several committees in the Tennessee House of Representatives, including Chairing the powerful House Transportation Committee.

He was selected the Pride of Obion County in 1996, Legislator of the Year, National Association of the Self-Employed in 1992, Outstanding Alumni Bethel College, in 1992 and Legislator of the Year, Tennessee Developmental District in 1996.

He is expected to fill us in on the accomplishments of the 105th General Assembly, which adjourned May 21, 2008.

Phillip was born May 19, 1952, he has two sons, Chip and Chad, a grandson AJ and a new grandaughter Kaylee. Phillip received his BS Degree from UTM Martin, and also owns his own Wholesale Food Distribution business here in Obion County.

Two weeks ago, at the beginning of our meeting out-going President Barry Keathley introduced a prospective new member, Tim Shanks, of Commercial Bank here in Union City.

After being introduced by Steve Conley, Assistant District Governor, Audrey Roberts, was called on to install our new Officers for the year 2008-09.

She began by congratulating the club on 72 years of existence and the number of members for a community the size of Union City, she also touched on the success of various programs of our club, such as Rotary Relay, the Rotary Scholarships and more.

Asking all 2008-09 officers of our club to come to the front as a group and reminding them of their responsibilities as officers of Rotary, President Steve Conley, President Elect Randy Barnes, Secretary Gary Houston, Sergeant-at-Arms Al Creswell, Directors Jody Kizer, Richard Graham and Dave Schlager took the Oath of Office, as directed by Ms. Roberts.

President Keathley took the floor and expressed his appreciation to the club for it’s support of him during his tenure on the Ascending Board of our local club and especially the support he received during his year as president.

President Keathley then called In-Coming President, Steve Conley to the podium and presented him with the coveted Presidents Pin.

As his first act as President Steve asked Barry to return to the podium and presented him with the Past-President’s Pin and the Past-President’s Plaque. And as his second act as president he jokingly banned all "lawyer jokes" from any meeting in the coming year.

Our new president, Steve Conley, was born on May 23, 1969 in Nashville, Tennessee. He moved to Union City later that year with his parents, Bruce and Carolyn Conley. Steve attended school in Union City and graduated from Union City High School in 1987. He then attended the University of Memphis where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1991 and then a law degree in 1993. He has been practicing law with Conley Campbell Moss Smith since 1994.

He is very active in the legal community at both the local and state level. He is a member of the Obion County Bar Association and was a for

President of that organization. He is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association House of Delegates. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee County Attorneys Association and was President of that organization in 2007. He has served as County Attorney since 1995.

Steve has been very active in our community since moving back here in 1994. He was President of the Union City Jaycees in 1998-99. He has also served on the board of Directors for the Obion County Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Union City, Inc. He has also been very active in coaching youth sports. He has coached baseball, soccer and basketball during the past several years. He has also served as a Cub Scout Den leader.

Steve is married to Wesley Farmer Conley, formerly of Dyersburg, TN. They have two children, Tripp, age 9 and Caroline, age 6. They have two dogs, a German Shepard and Collie, and one cat.
