Today, Rotarians get a preview of the up-coming season for the Union City Golden Tornados, as the local faithful are looking forward to a better and brighter future for the once power-house program wearing the purple and gold.
New Union City High School head football coach Darren Bowling has been hired to restore the proud tradition that once was the Tornado program. Bowling came to Obion County after a successful 10-year stint in the private school ranks in both Mississippi and Louisiana, and was the head coach at Obion County Central from 2003-06. He lead the Rebels to the school’s only state playoff win his first season, and is one of just three coaches at OCCHS to have two winning seasons. He also beat Union City in all four of his seasons on the Central sideline.
Among the personal achievements going to Coach Bowling’s outstanding career are, 2005, Tennessee Titans State Coach of the Week, 2003, State AA Coach of the Year boys Track, State AA Coach of the Year girls Track, 2001 District 2-AAA Coach of the Year, 1999, District 2-AAA Coach of the Year, 1995, District 2-AA Coach of the Year.
Coach Bowling and his wife Dawn have four children.
Next Week, the local club can look forward to receiving inside information on the ever expanding business of Farm Commodities, as local businessman Will Wade visits and shares his version of how grain markets work.
The Wade family is currently involved in several farm related business, including 4 grain elevators, 3 cotton gins, a cotton warehouse, a family farm operation and a commercial strawberry operation know as Tom Wade Strawberries. Will currently oversees the operations of all of these ventures.
He is involved in pursuits other than the family business, as he is a director of First State Bank, and is also a director on board that oversees the operations of Magnolia Place, a non-profit assisted living facility here in Union City. He serves on the board of the Community Foundation of Obion County, previously served on the board of the Union City Schools Foundation and the Finance Committee of the First United Methodist Church. He and his family are members of the First United Methodist Church here in Union City.
His topic of discussion will cover grain futures trading, forward contracting, and basically how grain markets effect our lives.
Last Week, after Randy Barnes finished his "ung-gawaa", he introduced the most successful coach the UTM Skyhawk football program has seen in many years.
Coach Simpson began by saying he had been thinking about letting Coach Barnes speak to his team at half-time, but half-time only last 20 minutes, so he had to scrap that idea. All kidding aside, he informed us that he and Randy had a great working relationship, as far as seeing the football program grow and prosper on the UTM Campus.
He expressed his appreciation for the contributions from the locals toward the new turf on the field and the difference it had made in his program, as far as appearance and dressing up the field as a whole.
Coach Simpson reflected on his first season at UTM and the tremendous success of that year and then on to last season, being ranked No. 12 out of 119 teams in that division, but after loosing 8 starters and the tough schedule he had set up, the team started off with an 0-4 record, and loosing their first OVC challenge against Austin Pea. He went on to say that last season did turn around and the team won 4 of their last 5 games, and he was proud of the fact that the team ended up 4-4 in the conference and lost 4 games by a combined 15 points. After reflecting on that season he said that keeping his kids focused , with all the challenges they face going to college, with classes, financing and social problems, his main job was to keep them ready to perform on Saturday.
He said that he had stumbled upon a word play game known as "DASH". The "D" stands for discipline, the "A" for attitude, the "S" for selflessness and the "H" for habit. He went into detail explaining these four letters and said that you would see many students and fans wearing badges and advertising the slogan, "UTM-DASH" in the up-coming season.
Coach Simpson ended by saying this season was looking up, due to the fact he is returning 8 starters on defense, offense returns 7 starters, and added a transfer wide receiver from Ole-Miss. He said that he is good shape as far as special teams this year also. He said "we has a challenging schedule with South Florida and Auburn to face this season and asked for support from the local people".
