Today, Cathy Waggoner, a native of Union City, will enlighten Rotarians on the scholarship program available through the Promethean Foundation for at risk preschool children, making them eligible to attend daycare.
Cathy graduated from UTM "more than a few years ago with a degree in education and a marriage license that has been good for a lot of years" she said. Her husband , a farm boy from middle TN, is Ronnie Waggoner. They make their home in Union City raising 3 children who attended Union City School System. Those children have since married and provided 4 grand children, who are perfect in every way from their grandmothers’s view.
After graduation Cathy soon became interested in early childhood education. She worked in a local day-care center for 20 years. She serves on the local school board representing Ward 4, and also has interest including membership at First Baptist Church and the Adult Choir.
Since 2004 she has been employed by Promethean Foundation as administrator of a the afore mentioned scholarship program. Promethean Foundation was designed to study the effects of daycare on at-risk children from age - birth to five years old.
Next week, the speakers podium and Union City Rotary will be visited by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, as Roy Logan, a native Obion County person and TWRA Officer for this area entertains us with-out-a -doubt some fantastic stories and experiences he has encountered during his tenure in Obion County’s outdoors, and it’s many adventures one can participate in.
He attended junior high at the former Woodland Mills and then Dixie Elementary Schools, graduating from Obion County Central High School in 1997. After graduation from high school, he attended The University of Tennessee at Martin, majoring in Wildlife Biology and graduated in that area in 1992.
Roy began his career with TWRA in September 1992 as wildlife officer in Houston County. He then transferred to Lake County in 1996 and then on to Obion County as Wildlife Officer in 2000.
Roy is an avid outdoors man, participating in many fishing tournaments and other outdoor events all over Tennessee and adjoining states. He is also president of Dixie Community Center, and in 2001 was named Officer of the year for TWRA Area 11.
Two weeks ago, Jimmy Williamson of the Dyersburg Electric System and Chairman of the Board of the Cates Landing Project visited Rotary and gave a power-point presentation of the location and progress of the 22 million dollar project, which is expected to bring in an extreme amount of revenue and jobs to the three county area of Lake, Obion and Dyer Counties.
He pointed out the exact location of the project and how it will be connected to Dyersburg and Union City, with Interstate 55 in close proximity, and other major highways which will utilize the River Traffic, and to and from locations all across the United States and Canada.
He also compared the amount of product a barge could transport, as compared to the every-day truck and trailer, or the rail car, saying that the river transportation was the most efficient way to ship most any product to any area that was accessible to barge traffic. He also touched on the fuel efficiency of river traffic as compared to Highway or Rail.
He also said the location in Northwest Tennessee will give all of the alternate modes of transportation the advantage, as we are close to so many major modes of traffic and also the future I-69 project in the making for the area.
Last Week, as usual accolades are in order for the generosity of Bob and Jenny Kirkland for the use of their beautiful home and grounds for the annual fish fry, also, but certainly not least our appreciation and gratitude goes out to Todd Stone and the staff he put together to make this one of the most successful and enjoyable gatherings our club has had for quite a while. Our Thanks are not enough!!
Update on Bart White; the word is the doctors are managing his pain much better as of the last few days and he is getting more rest. According to sources, he is able to move himself from chair to bed without assistance, and the doctors are thinking this is a big step and they are hopeful that this is an indication that the radiation is helping, however we don’t know for sure at this time and are hopeful to see even more improvements tomorrow they said. The doctors are saying he should show much improvement after the 5th treatment, which will come on Thursday, which was yesterday.
The family requests our continued thoughts and prayers.
