Today, local businessperson, Lyda Rice visits U.C. Rotary, with a message of interest the entire community is keeping an eye on, concerning the animal shelter problems our community has witnessed the last few months.
Lyda, after attending a local Leadership Tomorrow program here in Union City, decided that it could be possible for one person to make a difference in the community in which they live. From a small group of volunteers and about 10 local business owners a downtown revitalization program was begun. Thus the City of U.C. became a Main Street Community. She was the first Main Street Director and held that position for two years. She has served on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and was elected to serve on the City Council She received the WPSD TV Jefferson aware, The National Distinguished Community Leadership award and the list goes on.
While serving on the U.C. City Council she became aware of the problems associated with the local animal shelter. Since that time it has been a dream of hers to provide a better more professional shelter for these unfortunate cast offs of our society.
Sharing the podium with Lyda today we welcome Lois Birk, who Joined the first Ken-Tenn Humane Society and was active in it until its reorganization. in 2002.
She has also helped the Society develop a spay/neuter program that has spay/neutered 2000 animals in the last 6 years.
Next week, UTM Head Basketball Coach Bret Campbell visits with a look into the up-coming season for his Skyhawk Round Ball Team.
Bret begins his tenth year as head coach at UTM. In nine seasons he has led his team to six Ohio Valley Conference tournament appearances and has coached two OVC Newcomers of the Year, two Freshmen of the Year and one Player of the Year. During his tenure Campbell has graduated 89 percent of his players and coached 12 athletes who have moved on to play professionally.
Campbell led the Skyhawks to a 17-16 record and a fourth-place finish during the 2007-08 season. The Skyhawks advanced to the OVC tournament semifinals where they lost to eventual champion Austin Peay by only one point.
In 2001-02 Campbell led the team to its first winning season as a Division 1 program. Entering the 2006-07 season his team held the nation’s fifth longest non-conference home winning streak at 28.
Along with Coach Campbell next week, he will have with him OVC Freshman of the Year and Preseason All-OVC First Team Member, Marquis Weddle. Also expect to see 2007-08 OVC Player of the year, OVC Male Athlete of the Year, 2008-09 OVC Preseason Player of the Year Lester Hudson, and the latest Tornado to sign on with Coach Campbell MJ Brown.
Last Week, TWRA Agent Roy Logan visited Rotary. His first order of business, he asked all members present who were poachers to please raise their hand.
He said one of the first things he had to get used to when he became a wildlife officer was learning that everybody will lie to you under certain circumstances.
Roy explained the concepts of the job of being a Game Warden. "He said TWRA was established in 1974, and their job, as an agency is to manage the fish and wildlife of Tennessee, we also manage the boating areas of the state".
He said the state has a big variance of wildlife, due to the length of the state, with an estimated 1,200 to 1,500 Bear population in our state.
He also spoke of transferring animals in the state, saying in 1950 there were 2,000 deer in our state, last year there were 175,000, killed in our state. Last year we released the last of the Turkeys we plan to release in the state and expect them to grow in population as well as the Deer have, and almost 40000 Turkeys were killed last year in our state.
He then went into the problems they were having with the small game population in the state, and the things they had done to promote small game had not gone well.
Roy went into how fortunate we were to have Reelfoot Lake sitting this close. With 5 Wildlife Refuges, which always produces a count of at least 400,000 ducks in this area. Also there is the Gooche Wildlife area at Obion and he spoke of how many man hours and dollars it took to control that area itself.
"We have the resources to draw many dollars from out-of-state to this area, in the way we manage our wildlife" he said.
Roy closed with the mention of Safety Classes the TWRA conduct in the areas of boating and hunting.
