Today, with the season just around the corner, we welcome Coach Bret Campbell, Head Coach of the UTM Skyhawk Basketball team. Campbell enjoys a very good win-loss record at UTM since joining that program in 1999, and begins his 10th year as head coach in that program.
Campbell, 47, came to UT Martin men’s basketball team from Austin Peay, credited with helping build the conference-rival Governors into a successful OVC program, as he helped lead them to an NCAA tournament appearance and a share of the OVC championship in 1997.
He came to the Austin Peay campus after three seasons as a Central Florida assistant. He served five seasons as recruiting coordinator for Joe Dean Jr., first a Birmingham Southern and then at Central Florida.
A native of Anderson, Ind., he was captain of the 1979 Anderson High School state title runner-up team. He played college basketball at Valdosta State, a former opponent and rival of UT Martin from the Gulf South Conference of Div. II. He left Valdosta State as the school’s all time assist leader. After receiving his undergraduate degree in 1983, he remained at the school as a graduate assistant for two seasons.
Bret and his wife, Marcia, have three children, Caitlin, Cannon and Carter.
Coach Campbell will also have with him today, UTM standouts, and former local standouts, Lester Hudson, Marquis Weddle and the latest local talent to sign with the program, MJ Brown
Next week, we look forward to an informative program, as Dr. Margaret Gore of the Family Cancer Center here in Union City visits an shares different types and strands of Cancer Treatments.
Dr. Gore did her undergraduate work at Harvard University, attended Medical School at Duke University. She did her Internship and Residence on Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama. And also did her Fellowships at University of Alabama. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Board Certified in Medical Oncology, and Board Certified in Hematology.
Dr Gore joined the Family Cancer Center in 2005. She has been in practice in the Memphis area since 1992. Dr Gore is especially interested in new and innovative drug technologies. She serves on several medical care committees in the Memphis area, and has served as President of the Tennessee Oncology Practice Society.
Dr. Gore and her husband, Peter Baskind, a Memphis attorney, have two children, David and Abby. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, playing the piano, and riding her horse, Smooch.
Last Week, longtime Union City Business Person, and Community Leader, Lyda Rice shared with Rotarians the good news of the happenings going on with the Ken-Ten Humane Society here in Union City, with the taking possession of property for that purpose.
Lyda informed us that she had been a member of the Society for about five years, and shared with us the fact that the reason the City has not been involved in the situation is because no-one was interested enough to step up and take the responsibility. She said at the present time there is a good team that has stepped up and, "we are not the fanatics, and we are not the kind of people who don’t care, we are kind of in the middle and we like to think of ourselves as taking care of the basic needs of animals".
She said she and Lois Burke had approached the City Council about a piece of property, which could be donated to the right group by the City for a good cause. After taking possession of this property, Lyda said her group had been taking care of animals already.
At this point she turned the podium over to Ms. Burke . She informed us that she had been president of the Society for a couple of years . After moving here from St. Louis she soon saw an animal crisis in the area, after a couple of incidents with her own animals.
She said after applying for a grant in So. Fulton, and failing the group in Fulton lost a lot of steam, but in 2002 the Society was re-organized and received the legal status and received several grants since that time . Some of these grants were put to good use, as in the years they have been in control, they have spade/neutered over 2,000 animals in the Fulton area.
She said the group also helps other people, such as residents who have had animals dropped on their property. The Society also works with other areas of the country to help get animals adopted.
