District Governor International President
Larry Boyd Dong Kurn Lee
Brentwood, Tennessee Seoul, Korea
Today, Rotarians will hear from one of our own, as Roger Williams fills the speakers slot, with a success story of the family owned business, known as Williams Sausage and is celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary this year.
The Sausage Company began in 1958, by Harold Loyd Williams, and wife Hazel. The business has grown from a one room tin building to producing 40,000,000 pounds of meat products annually that are sold in 30 states. When the business started Roger’s mother and grandmother actually sewed the cloth bags for the sausage sacks, and Harold Loyd worked 18 hours days to get the product made and delivered, many times making the product in the morning and delivering it in the afternoon. His first delivery truck was a pickup with a Coca Cola cooler in the back to keep the product cold. Today the company has approximately 310 employees and work three shifts to meet the demand for the product.
Roger graduated from OCCHS in 1959, earned his BS degree in accounting from UTM, and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1987. He is a member and Chairman of the Obion County School Board, member of O.C. Chamber of Commerce and member of Obion County United Way. He received his Paul Harris fellow honor in 2006, and he is Chairman of Rotary Scholarship Committee..
Roger and Juli have three children, Lesley, Emily and Bret. They have lived in Obion County their entire lives.
Next week, we look forward to a visit from Rotary District 6760’s Governor Larry Boyd of Brentwood, Tennessee.
Governor Boyd has been active in Rotary for 25 years, a charter member and president of the Nashville South Rotary Cub and charter member and charter president of the Brentwood Morning Club. He was selected as "Rotarian of the Year" in each club. He has served as a Governor’s Representative (2 times) and as Assistant Governor (3 times) and on various District Committees. Larry has 25 years of perfect attendance, is a Paul Harris Fellow, a charter member of the Paul Harris Society and a graduate of the initial Rotary Leadership Academy class. A graduate of Leadership Brentwood (2000) and Brentwood Citizen’s Police Academy (2006) Larry has been active in various community projects and events. He has served on the resource Committee for the Martin Senior Citizen’s Center, as an advisor to Junior Achievement and a coach in youth athletics. He is a deacon and ministry leader at the Hillsboro Church of Christ.
Larry is a native of Danville, KY, and a graduate of Georgia Tech University (1966)
Last Week, Dr. Margaret Gore of the Union City Family Cancer Center visited and held a captive audience the entire time of her presentation.
Her powerful power-point presentation was one of the most interesting presentations Rotarians have witnessed in some time.
Her topic was Cancer, it’s treatments, awareness and prevention of the dreaded disease. She encouraged preventive measures, such as annual check-ups, Mammogram , Chest X-Rays, Colostomy and so-fourth. She said if you are a smoker, Quit, and if you are over the age of 50 the preventive measures are very important, and if you are under the age of 50, but have a history of cancer in your family, please use every preventive measure available to you. She said there are rare cases of lung cancer in patients who do not smoke, but the habit of smoking was just asking for trouble with your lungs.
Dr. Gore went into some detail as to the services offered at the Union City Family Cancer Center, and said that the services offered there were easily comparable to any Cancer Center in the nation, including Vanderbilt, M.D. Anderson and she named others.
The floor was opened for questions at this time, and one of the questions was, is Obion County a high risk for cancer. She said no, however our neighbor Weakley County does seem to have a slightly higher rate of cancer patients than other counties in the area.
Dr. Gore brought along Amy Kizer, her Nurse Practitioner, and had high praise for Amy, saying that local people seemed to be more relaxed having someone from this area they are acquainted with along side them during their trying time.
