Make Dreams Real
December 12, 2008
Today, we enjoy a double honor, as we welcome our second visit from the Union City Elementary School Choir in the form of the "Chorus Kids", a group of young students who always excite us with their entertainment in the form of Christmas Carols and young talented voices who work long and hard to share their talents and extreme dedication to this time of year. We are always extremely happy to see our youth participate in these types of activities.
We also extend a welcome to some of the parents and grandparents of some of these special kids and want to thank you for your dedication also, for without you these children could not entertain as they do.
Today we would also like to extend our welcome to Brandi Cantrell and the South Fulton Beta Club. These students are also an example of the good we see in our young citizens of the future.
We would like to express our appreciation to these students for their dedication to community service promoting Reading Railroad, as last year they raised and contributed $1,200.00 to this program and are doing the same this year. They received State Honors last year for their community activities.
Congratulations Brandi and students on a job well done!
Next week, should be very interesting as long time Athlete, Coach, Faculty Member, Marine, Administrator and Author at UTM, Bob Carroll visits and enlightens us on the long history of the College on the UTM campus.
Bob attended the University back when it was a Junior College in the early 1950s. He was the captain of the football team at that time and received MVP accolades both years as a player. From UTMB, he transferred to the University of Wyoming, where he received Academic All American and honors graduate in 1956. He received his Masters Degree in History from Ole Miss, and began his coaching career at UTM in 1957. Coach Carroll served as head football coach from 1957 until 1974. He is the all time winningest coach in UT Martin History. His 1967 Team won the Tangerine Bowl to win the Atlantic Coast Division National Championship.
Influenced by stories of UTJC from his father-in-law, Edward Clifton Pritchett, he undertook the writing of the History of the University of Tennessee Martin; The First One Hundred Years. Of which we will get some excerpts
Last Week, Union City Rotarians had all eyes turned toward a group of talented youngsters led by a young lady who has had to have spent a lot of her free time in training these kids , because the show they put on was extremely entertaining.
The show got off to a slightly delayed start, as we had to have a "clean up" in aisle three, but after that I think these kids could have passed the hat during and after their performance, and could have had enough money to have a pretty good Christmas for themselves.
The talents these children displayed, and the dedication of the Teachers, Children, Parents and Grandparents should make us all very proud that we are seeing future generations who are willing and able to make this country proud.

Did You Know?
Silent Night was written in 1818, by and Austrian priest Joseph Mohr. He was told the day before Christmas that the church organ was broken and would not be repaired in time for Christmas Eve. He was saddened by this and could not think of Christmas without music, so he wanted to write a carol that could be sung by choir to guitar music. He sat down and wrote three stanzas. Later that night the people in the little Austrian Church sang "Stille Nacht"for the first time.
