March 27, 2009
Today, Union City Rotary welcomes eight new members, one of the larges inductions in recent years for our club.
Mike Cox has been standing in front of his mirror all week getting prepared for this program, as he will do the honors, and you can be sure he will make some of the new members squirm in their seats a little.
Among the new members being installed today are, Dyland Bondurant, Mike Calfee, John Watts, Nick Hall, Jim Prather, Jay Davis, Wess Creech and David Rusell.
Our congratulations go out to these new members, and along with membership they will receive their Certificate, their pin, and some responsibility to the the community.
As a new member, You’ll get a chance to become more involved in your community and to provide aid to other parts of the world through the opportunities that your Rotary club and Rotary International offer.
Longtime Rotarians agree that involvement is key to getting the most out of membership. Volunteer to serve on a committee that meets your interest, to be a greeter of weekly club meetings, or to join a service project team. These activities will help you get to know your fellow club members and better understand the work of Rotary.WELCOME!
Next Week, Mike Sparks, West Tennessee Director of Fellowship for Christian Athletes will visit and should bring with him some very interesting information concerning that program.
The FCA is touching millions of lives..one heart at a time. Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world of Jesus Christ. FCA is the largest Christian sports organization in America. FCA focus on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ.
The non-school based FCA ministries reach the community through partnerships with the local churches, businesses, parents and volunteers. These ministries not only reach out to the community, but also allow the community to invest in athletes and coaches.
Community Ministries include: Stewardship Ministries, Adult Ministries, Sport-Specific Ministries, Membership, Urban Initiatives, Global Sports Development, Clinics, Product and Resources Development, and Professional Athlete Ministries.
Last Week, Jo Ann Speer, Manager of Everett Stewart Regional Airport visited and filled us in on past projects, current projects, and future projects going on out our local airport.
She had to delay her presentation some what, as several people had to explain to Randy Barnes the difference between "FFA" and "FAA", but he finally absorbed the difference and we were able to get on with the program.
She began by acknowledging some of her instructors and some of her students who are members of our club and present at the meeting, as she is also a flight instructor.
She said about eight years ago a new runway was constructed about 400 feet from the existing runway and it allowed a position approach procedure, which allows pilots to land in marginal conditions. She said that there are 83-84 Airports in the state and only 11 have this type of approach system. In 2005 there was a new taxiway installed and new taxiway lighting, which cost about 1.2 million dollars. Also there were 2 concrete pads to accommodate the larger aircraft which began to use the Airport.
She also said there is a project going on now, which Congressman Tanner is involved, to lengthen the existing runway, and a 1 million dollar appropriation of Federal Funds has already been approved. and mentioned the problems that go along with this type of project concerning different studies which have to be done in order for the project to move on.
"In 2006, the airport joined forces with Weakley County, which improved the operating capitol the airport has, and thus a Regional Airport", she said.
She said "as it looks now, the airport is well on it’s way to complete the program of expansion, after rigorous negotiations to purchase the land needed for this project have finally been completed".
