Today, Mark Hayes of the Dyersburg Rotary Breakfast Club joins us and shares experiences he encountered while on a recent Rotary mission trip to Honduras.
He has accompanied members of the Lawerenceburg Rotary Club for the past three years to small communities near Choluteca, Honduras, assisting in providing clean water, electricity and dental care to these areas in partnership with the Choluteca Rotary Club.
Mark and his oldest daughter Lendsay and their neighbor, general contractor Don Gregson, worked at Jocote de Linaca, Honduras, to provide electricity to the entire town this year.
Mark is a local, having grown up in Lake County, but has lived in rural Dyer County for the past 20 years. He is a 1979 graduate of UTM and a 1982 graduate of UT College of Law. He is married to Kelli Barrineau. His daughter Olivia and step-son Colton live with them in Dyer County. His Daughters Lindsay and Ashley are both college students. Mark is a member of First United Methodist Church in Dyersburg, and has been a member of the Dyersburg Breakfast Rotary Club since 1997. He is an attorney and mediator in Dyersburg.
Next Week, we can look forward to another interesting program, as Harry Lane III, Senior District Executive for Davy Crockett District of Boy Scouts of America, visits. This district includes the counties of Obion, Lake, Dyer, N. Lauderdale, N. Crockett and N. Gibson, or West Tennessee Area Council.
He will be talking about how Scouting has grown in Obion County and general Scouting in West Tennessee.
Harry began Scouting in 1980 as a second grade Wolf Scout. He won the awards of Arrow of Light in 1984, God and Country in 1986, and Eagle Scout in 1990, all out of Forest Heights United Methodist Church in Jackson, Tennessee, Pack and Troop 15.
He is a graduate of Jackson Central-Merry High School, 1991, Graduated form Jackson State Community College with an Associate’s in Business in 1993, and Graduated form Lambuth University with a Bachelor Degree in Marketing in 1996.
He went to work for the West Tennessee Area Council in 2007 in the Big Hatchie District, consisting of Tipton, Fayette, Haywood, and Lauderdale Counties.
Last Week, West Tennessee’s Director of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Michael Sparks paid Rotary a visit, and left us with some very interesting information concerning the campus ministries which the FCA fulfills.
Michael had a guest with him, Barry Cox, a staff member who oversees the inner city ministry out of the Jackson area. He went on to say that his staff covers about 20 counties between the rivers in Tennessee.
Mike said "our purpose is to present to athletes and coaches an alternate influence, to their athletic activities, to challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and further their relationship with their Church". He also said that the "One Way to Play Drug Free program" has a great influence on both athletes and coaches. He went on to say that the heart of their program is the coaches of these young athletes, and he also said that he was a product of a coach in his past. He said that his High School Coach was not a very good role model, but when he entered college he had a great role model for a coach.
He gave a personal example of how much a coach can influence a young person, by pointing out he could not do some of the things his parents expected until he had fulfilled the wishes of his coach.
He explained that Barry, his guest, grew up in East St Louis, had played on 4 different collegiate teams, being kicked off of 3 different teams, and ended up on the fourth, before God impacted his life and he became the role model for a lot of young men and women is the area he serves.
He talked some about some of the people involved in his program, and the fact that they were dividing West Tennessee into two divisions, being Northwest Tennessee and Southwest Tennessee, this office will be set up in Union City, with former Union City Coach and the present principal of U.C. High, Barry Duncan will be heading up this area.
He also mentioned the (4 C’s) being their Coaches Ministry, their Camp Ministry, Community Ministry and their Campus Ministry.
He then went into a short film presentation of some of the ways the FCA serves youth and our campuses. Also he mentioned the legal aspects of the program, saying that they meet very little resistance, as far as some of the things that are going on in our country to resist Christianity these days, because of the strict rules they follow on each of the charters they set up.
