Make Dreams Real
April 17, 2009
Today, we welcome Harry Lane III, Senior District Executive for Davy Crockett District of Boy Scouts of America. This district includes counties of Obion, Lake, Dyer, N. Lauderdale, N. Crockett and N. Gibson, or what is known as The West Tennessee Area Council.
Harry began Scouting in 1980, as a 2nd grade Wolf Scout, received his Arrow of Light badge in 1984, his God and Country in 1986, and his Eagle Scout in 1990, all out of Forest Heights United Methodist Church in Jackson, TN Pack and Troop 15.
He is a member of First United Methodist Church in Jackson, graduated from Jackson Central-Merry High School in 1991, graduated from Jackson State Community College with a Associate’s in business in 1993, and then went on to Lambuth University and received a Bachelor Degree in Marketing in 1996.
He began work in 2007, in the West TN Area Council, with the Big Hatchie district of Boy Scouts. After a brief stint in the banking business, came back to Scouting with the Davy Crockett District and has been there ever since.
Harry’s main role is to help keep Scouting alive in North West Tennessee, and today he will be talking about how Scouting has grown in Obion County and general Scouting in West Tennessee.
Next Weeks speaker will need no introduction, as long time civic leader, and CEO of Westan Insurance Group, here in Union City, Jim Rippy will take the podium and fill us in on a recent trip taken by him, his wife, and Robert and Jenny Kirkland to Egypt.
The program will consist of some of the travels taken while in Egypt, as they traveled on the Nile River and visited the Pyramids and Temples of ancient Egypt.
He will also relate to the observations of Egyptian life that dates back over six thousand years, and he will describe the ancient life on the Nile River and the pyramids, temples and tombs of the Kings and Pharos and how some of these ancient symbols and traditions have affected us today, he will also describe life on the Nile River and in Egypt as it is lived today.
Seems that there were four choices of people who might present this information to Union City Rotary on the trip, Jim said there was a drawing as to who would do the honors, and as luck would have it he drew the dreaded short straw.
Last Week, Barry Keathley did the introductions of two fellow Rotarians from the Dyersburg Breakfast Rotary Club, Mark Hayes, our speaker and Judy Long, who he said was the first female member of that club, and now is the president of that club.
Mark began by saying three years ago he went to Honduras for the first time and knew none of the group at the time. He has gone to this country for the last three years, with a group from the Lawerenceburg Rotary Club and completed many projects during their Mission Trips.
He used pictures and maps of the area along with his interesting presentation. He said that the people of the area were very receptive to their coming, and were very appreciative of the work they had done. He also said that there was a Dentist in the group, and there was quite a bit of dental work done while on the trip.
He went on to describe some of the projects they fulfilled while there, the main one being to bring electricity to the entire town of Jocote de Linaca, and how much the local people were still enjoying that project. Mark went into some length on the living conditions in the area, and how much they were improving since these missions began.
Mission Trips as this one can be very fulfilling, as Rotary International has committed itself to many many projects world-wide, such as eradicating polio, clean water projects all over the world, and bringing better health care to third world countries.
