Make Dreams Real
May 29, 2009
Today,
with May being National Mental Health Month, today’s program is very fitting.
Jenifer Hart, who is a therapist at Baptist Behavioral Health and MSW Consultant for Baptist Hospice Care located at Baptist Memorial Hospital here in Union City will speak, and brings with her a slide presentation titled.........
"Managing Stress.......Maximizing Life".
Jenifer has been a grief counselor for 10 years at Good Grief Camp in Memphis. As part of this program she went to New York in 2002 as a grief counselor at the first Camp of Hope which was organized for the children that had family members die as a result of the events of 911. She is also an instructor with UTM and Department of Children Services in training adults to be foster parents. Currently Jenifer is chairman of the board of the Northwest Council on Children and Youth. She was the chairman of the Obion County Interagency from 2000 - 2007 and also assisted with the Obion/Weakley Counties Drug Court.
She graduated from UT Martin with a BS degree in Psychology and Political Science and UT Memphis with a Masters in Social Work. She is married to David Hart, they have 2 children, Josh attending UTM and a daughter, Jessica who will begin her college career at UT Knoxville this fall.
Next Week, Union City Rotary will experience another very gratifying program, as we present some of Union City High Schools Alumni, who have completed at least one year of advanced education, the Verhine Scholarships.
This award winning program began with a $3,500,000 gift from the Verhine estate in 2002. The income from this money, as of 2008, has been able to distribute $656,000 in scholarships, and this year another $165,000, can be added to that total.
There are 120 students receiving these monies this year, and as noted in the past, Union City Rotary believes in education, and takes a strong stance to enable those in need an opportunity to attend the college of their choice.
The Rotary Scholarship program and the Verhine Scholarship program has a long history of affording this opportunity to the students of our county, with well over 3 million dollars being invested in our youth since 1982, not only in aid for them to attend our colleges and universities, but also in the past several years, it has been expanded to help in the cost of a student obtaining a Vocational Technical Degree.
Last Week, John Warner spoke briefly of what it was like to make up a Rotary Meeting in Spain, and encouraged members, if the opportunity arose, to make up any meeting they could in a foreign country.
President Conley then presented the club with the coveted banner of being District 6760 Rotary Club of the Year, pictured below, which was presented to him at the recent Rotary District Conference, along with this, U.C. Rotary received the Presidential Citation Award, and the New Generations Award.
Art Sparks took to the podium, and had the tedious job of roasting one of our newest members, The Rev. David Russell, which unlike Art, he had to stick to "Just The Facts".
Then it was the Kizer Brothers turn, and at times everyone was really feeling sorry for these guys. As the roast continued, our president was included into some of Jody’s escapades. Jody and Jason, although turning a bright shade of red at times, took it all in stride, as their Father, Jim looked on in amazement.
