Today, Union City Rotary welcomes Glen Vanderford, who will do the honors of "The Swearing In" of our new officers for the up-coming year.
Glen is a charter member of the Old Hickory Rotary Club in Jackson, he is a Past President of that club, a Paul Harris Fellow and a former District Governor. He has recently been named Trainer for our Zone. He also recently retired from Mead Johnson & Company, after 32 years, being offered a lucrative early retirement package, he now spends his time with his favorite hobbies, Rotary Travel, Family Activities and golfing.
He has been married to his lovely wife Beth for 35 years, they have two daughters, Merideth Raspberry, who is a Pharmacist in Hazel, KY and Ellen Byrd who is also a Pharmacist in Nashville. They are expecting their first Grandchild in about two weeks.
Union City Rotary has experienced another banner year under President Conley and his slate of officers, he leaves with some solid credentials, with the club experiencing a huge number of new members being added, a record year as far as dollar amounts being distributed in the Rotary Scholarship Program, and just recently being honored at the District Convention with several honors being bestowed on our club, including being "District Club of the Year" for District 6760.
Next Week, due to the 4th of July Holiday, there will be no meeting of Union City Rotary, in two weeks, we will hear from Danny Jowers, who is Director of Obion County Emergency Management System. This should be an interesting program, and the first of many programs directed by our new Vice President, Gary Houston.
Next week we need to remember the birthday of our independence, and what a great Nation we live in. Please have a safe and happy 4th of July!
Last Week, Leland Davis gave us a brief up-date on the Rotary Tour Group, who left Union City just before our noon meeting, saying they left the Clinic on a bus headed fore Memphis to catch their plane headed for St. Paul MN, for their first stop to change planes for Europe.
Gary Houston then introduced our speaker for the day, Mark Welch of WKMS Radio out of Murray, KY.
Mark began by introducing his "baby sister", Lynne Lowrance, wife of Mark Lowrance, owner of Lowrance Sound here in Union City. He went on to tell the story of the move to Fulton from Michigan, saying after they had been here a while and went back to Michigan to visit, all of their relatives wanted them to just sit in the floor and talk, so they could take in the southern accent the family had picked up since being in the South.
Mark said he had been involved in public radio since being a student at Murray State, got his first job in 1976, at the radio station at Murray State, and has been in the broadcasting business off and on ever since.
He said the weekly audience for WKMS, was about 25,000 people, covering 27 counties in KY, So. IL, NW TN, and part of the Boot-heel of MO. He went on to say that the weekly audience of an NPR Station, of which WKMS is affiliated, is approximately 35 million.
He said "media is in trouble right now, all media audiences are on the decline, between 1998 and 2008, NPR’s audience grew 104%, and in the same time period all newspapers lost an audience of 29% in the same 10 year period and nightly news network lost 24% of their audience during that time, radio news lost 29%" he said.
Mark said WKMS is approaching 40 years of service to the area, first off of a tower in Farmington, KY at 13,000 watts, and then moved the tower to LBL, increasing their power to 100,000 watts, but lost a significant audience in in extreme Western KY, but now are in the process of putting a repeater station in Fulton. He said they were having a problem right now with location of this repeater tower, and asked Rotarians for help in obtaining a suitable location for this tower, in order to serve the local area.
