The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands
July 10, 2009
Today, Rotarians begin a new year of programs under the direction of our new Vice President, Gary Houston.
Our speaker today is Danny C. Jowers, director of Obion County’s Emergency Management System.
He will be discussing the history and current standing of the Emergency Management Agency in Obion County. Also he will discuss the various workings of the County Government as it relates to the budget of the County.
Danny is a graduate of the Class of 1977, at the former Kenton High School. He received his Bachelors of Science in Horticulture and Landscape Design from UTM in 1995, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He has held various Law Enforcement positions, both Federal and State from 1977 until 1992. He retired form the Florida Highway Patrol in 1992 with the rank of Lieutenant. During his career he has been with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as a Fingerprint Expert, a Crime Scene Technician for Miami-Dade Co. Sheriff’s Office, and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, in the Crime scene Fingerprint Division. Danny has served as the County Budget Chairman since 2004. He began the job of County Emergency Management Director in 2009. He also operates a multi acre produce farm outside of Kenton, and enjoys traveling and plant breeding.
Next Week, recently retired and long time General Sessions Judge, Raymond Morris will visit Rotary. Raymond served Obion County as it’s General Sessions Judge for thirty years, and at the age of seventy three, he decided it was time for someone else to take the seat.
His Retirement became effective July 1st of this year, with a well publicized retirement gathering at the Obion County Court House, with all of the elected officials of the County Seat being present, along with several other dignitaries of the Region, and as you know, Attorney Jimmy Smith will serve the rest of Raymond’s term, before the election of a new Judge.
He married his lovely wife, Lou (Collins) Morris fifty six years ago coming September 12 of next year. They have three children, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Raymond will no doubt entertain us with some of the experiences he has encountered in his court over the years, and you can rest assured these will be well worth the effort to make next weeks meeting.
Two weeks ago, Steve Conley led us through the four way test for his last time as President of Union City Rotary, as Randy Barnes took over as Union City Rotary’s 73rd President.
The Swearing in Ceremony was conducted by Glen Vanderford, Former District Governor for District 6760.
Glen began by complimenting President Steve and his Board of Directors for the outstanding job they have done over the past year, and especially the accomplishment of Union City Rotary receiving the Presidential Citation Award for this year and also issued accolades for the Club being awarded Club of the Year for District 6760, which he said includes 65 Rotary Clubs throughout West and Middle Tennessee.
He went on to mention and praise U.C. Rotary for the many projects they have been involved in over the past year, such as the Literacy Program, the Tour Group Program, the Youth Exchange Program and especially the success of the Scholarship Program.
Glen then called on the Board of Directors and Officers of Union City Rotary to come to the front in order to make a challenge to them and administer the Oath of Office for the up-coming year.
He called Randy Barnes, Upcoming President, Steve Conley as Past President, President Elect Gary Houston, Secretary Al Creswell, Sgt. of Arms Jody Kizer, Director Richard Graham, Director Chuck Doss and Director Charles Kirkland.
He complimented the group for being willing to serve the Union City Rotary Club for the year 2009 and 2010, and went on to say that the U.C. Rotary Club, back in 1936 lit the way for wonderful works to take place here in Obion County. He went on to administer the Oath of Office for the group.

Short Story -
John was on his deathbed and gasped pitifully. He said to his wife, please give me one last request. ‘Of course John’ his wife said softly. ‘Six months after I’m gone I want you to marry Bob’. ‘But I thought you hated Bob,’ she said. With his last breath John said, ‘I do!’
