Today, Union City Rotary will induct two of it’s members into that prestigious group of being a "Paul Harris Fellow".
This title is used to award Rotarians who have made special contributions to Rotary, and carries the name of the founder of the first Rotary Club in Chicago.
After the inductions, we will be entertained by Betsy Appleton. Betsy is the daughter of of Mike and Cathy Cox and Thomas Appleton. She is a 2007 honors graduate of Union City High School. She is currently a junior majoring in Political Science with a minor in Business Administration at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Betsy is also a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, Orange Pride Vol Hostesses, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and a 2009 Recruitment Counselor.
She will be speaking of her recent travels in China and the study of Chinese culture and politics through the University of Tennessee Programs Abroad office. She will also highlight the advantages of studying abroad.
Next week, our new State Representative, Judy Barker will be on hand and fill us in on her main objective, "Keeping the Focus on North West Tennessee". Judy brings with her some very impressive credentials considering the short period of time she has represented the 77th District in Nashville.
Since taking the Oath of Office, and being a house member of the 106th General Assembly, she has been named to the House Education Committee, the House Transportation Committee, the House Rural Roads Subcommittee and the House K-12 Subcommittee.
Judy has been a long time organizer and supporter of educational, athletic and fine-arts foundations in Northwest Tennessee. She is an attorney in Union City, earning her law degree from University of Memphis.
She describes herself as a pro-family, pro-gun Democrat. Judy is also involved locally as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Tennessee Farm Bureau, Tennessee Wildlife Federation, Past President of the Athletic Booster Club, Board member of the Masquerade Theater Performing Arts and Foundation Committee of the Discovery Park Museum.
Last Week, if you missed the program you might have missed one of the best programs of the year, as Retired General Sessions Judge, Raymond Morris visited and offered experiences and antidotes of the thirty years he sat on that Bench.
He spoke of many cases he had before him as Judge, and said "he had made a few mistakes over the years, but every decision he made came from his heart, and tried to use common sense in in each case". Such as the decision he had to make in a case where a couple were splitting up and each wanted custody of the dog. He said, "I called a recess and sent them home after the dog and when they returned with the dog I put them in the hallway of the Court House on opposite sides of the hall, I put the dog in the center of the hall and ask them to speak to the dog, the dog went to the gentleman, I gave custody to the man", he said.
He also talked about his first year of appointment after taking over for Judge Ebb Gwaltney, and how County Commissioners thought he had t o be appointed by the Governor of the State. He made a trip to Nashville and visited with the Governor and got the appointment, but after returning to Union City found out that the Governor did not have to appoint, that the County Commission had that job, so he had to go through that process again.
He spoke of his early years in the Navy and how he decided to finish his education while in the Armed Forces and how that had changed his life. Shared some of his experiences while on the Union City Police Force after the Navy. He also talked briefly of how much he had appreciated the cooperation of the local attorneys over the years and how they had supported him throughout his tenure.
He said he and his wife were planning to enjoy his retirement, "We have purchased a Mobile Home and plan to do some serious traveling and camping for the next few years".
As a matter of fact this reporter tried to reach him this week, and Kay Calhoun at the Court house said I was going to have to wait a while, because he cut a retirement gathering short so he and his wife could leave on a camping trip.
