The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands

Today, let’s welcome Union City Head Football Coach, Darren Bowling. Darren is in his second year as skipper of the UCHS Tornadoes, and put up some impressive numbers in his first year. He compiled a 10-2 record last year, carrying his team into the play-offs for the first time in a while. This year he already has a 2-1 start in the young season, and has high expectations for the rest of the year. He has an overall record of 119-65.
Darren brought a new dimension to the program last year, by making sure the boys he had on the team really wanted to play football, and that has carried over into this year as well. He is a firm believer in his team, and his motivation shows up on the field in every game.
Coach Bowling came to Union City from a 1 year stint at Dyersburg High School, and having the Head Job at Obion County Central from 2003-2007, carrying that team to some of their most successful seasons in school history.
He graduated from Greenville Christian School, Greenville, MS in 1986, received his BS degree from Delta State University in 1991, with a Major in Physical Education K-12, and a minor in Social Science and Driver Ed. He returned to Greenville in 1993 as the Head Varsity Football Coach and boys and girls Track Coach. He spent several years coaching in Mississippi and Louisiana, before coming to Tennessee. He is married to Dawn Morgan Bowling, they have 4 children, Chase - 15, Meri-Morgan - 11, Taylor - 7 and Tyler - 7.
Next week, there has been a schedule change, with the Rotary Fish Fry being set tentatively for the 24th, due to some conflicts, it will be scheduled at a later date.
Instead, we will have the regularly scheduled meeting on Friday and will hear from Cathy Waggoner, director of the Promethean Foundation here in Union City.
Cathy became interested in early childhood education in her early career, and she worked with Care Bear Preschool and Daycare for 20 years, first as a teacher, then as director for 15 years. She serves on the local school board representing Ward 4. She is also currently serving as Past President of Northwest Association for Education of Young Children with positions on Advisory boards for the Tennessee Early Childhood Training Alliance, Childcare resource and Referral, UTM Child and Family Grant Program, and president of the TN Early Intervention Service Board.
Cathy has been with Promethean since 2004 as administrator of a scholarship program for at-risk preschool children to attend daycare. Promethean Foundation was designed to study the effects of daycare on at-risk children from age birth to five. Union City Rotary appoints the governing board of Promethean. Funding for the study will end in 2020.
Last week , Union City Rotary took a trip all over England with the Union City Rotary Travel Group. The group consisting of eight Union City High School Seniors recently returned from a trip of a lifetime which took them into several countries, such as Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and Italy.
There were several guests in the crowd, as the Students were accompanied by Parents and Grandparents alike to witness the presentation.
The program began with Leland Davis introducing the Students and Guests, and explaining the creation of the Tour Group.
Jacob Cross, who along with his wife Emily were the chaperones of the group, took the podium and thanked Union City Rotary for their generosity by making the trip possible at no cost to anyone who participated. He also went reported that the kids represented Rotary well on the excursion and anyone would be proud of the way the students conducted themselves.
Whitney Smith was first at the presentation table and took us through the experiences the group had in London, as they visited Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, among just a few of the places they witnessed while there. Second on the list was Chambrey Callicut who led us as we witnessed the "Changing of the Guard" at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier, their visit to the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and several more places of interest. Katelyn Ray took us on a Ferry Ride in Belgium, with pictures of historic buildings and some of the buildings which were built for the World’s Fair when it was located there. Will Arnold took us with them through Germany as he described some of the hats he bought while there and the trip down the Rhine River. Katey Crews let us accompany them to Austria with some beautiful pictures of the Alps and more interesting points visited while in that country. Kayla Eason took us to Italy and several pictures of vases which the group watches as they were built, and masks which is still the fashion there. She also let us tour the waterway streets of Venice with them. Paige Fisher took us to Switzerland with pictures of waterways bridges and swans and several points of interest in that country. Lastly Andrew Speed took his turn describing Paris and all the beautiful landmarks visited there.
