The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands
September 25, 2009
Today,
Cathy Waggoner returns to Union City Rotary with up-dates and other information concerning preschool education for at-risk children through her efforts with the Promethean Foundation.
Cathy has been employed by the Promethean Foundation as administrator of a scholarship program for at-risk preschool children to attend daycare since 2004. Promethean Foundation was designed to study the effects of daycare on at-risk children from age birth to five. Union City Rotary appoints the governing board for Promethean.
Cathy is a native of Union City. She graduated from UTM in 1973 with a degree in education and has a marriage license that has been good for 36 years. Her husband Ronnie is a farm boy from Middle Tennessee. They make their home in Union City and have raised 3 children who attended Union City School System. Those children have since married and provided 4 grand children who are perfect in every way, according to Cathy.
She became interested in early childhood education in her early career, working here in Union City at Kare Bear Preschool and Daycare for 20 years, first as a teacher, then as director for 15 years. She serves on the U.C. School Board representation Ward 4. She is a member of the First Baptist Church here in U.C. She is currently serving as Past President of the Northwest Association for for Education of Young Children with positions on Advisory Boards for the TN Early Childhood Training Alliance, Childcare Resource and Referral, UTM Child and Family Grant Program and president of the Tennessee Early Intervention Service Board.
Next week, Kenton business man and viticulture farmer Bill Sanderson will visit and bring with him something that Rotarians should be very interested in. In 1998, Bill began a new hobby, he planted 25 grape vines, nursed them, fertilized them in a special way, helped provide the right amount of sunlight, and things began to take shape. The next year he planted 25 more vines, and today he has 7,000 vines on 5.3 miles of trellis. This year he sold Kix Brooks from "Brooks & Dunn" and owner of Arrington Winery over 20,000 pounds of French Hybrid Grapes and delivered over 32,000 pounds to various wineries in middle and west Tennessee.
Bill is now growing five varieties of wine grapes on 10 acres. Next year he anticipates a yield of 80,000 pounds. Future plans include an additional 10 acres of grapes. Using the latest trellising options, , Bill receives yields from 4 to 7 tons per acre. In 4 years he anticipates a yield of almost 250,000 pounds.
According to a recent article in the Union City Daily Messenger he also has dreams of having his own Winery down around Kenton, along with other points of interest which will tie in with the White Squirrel, which Kenton is noted for.
Last week, Union City High School’s Head Football Coach, Darren Bowling paid his annual visit to Rotary, and had some very positive comments to pass on.
He said "when I came to Union City my five year plan was to have U.C.H.S. ready to move from UA to AA and not be at the bottom in facilities, pride or program, but rather to leap forward having everything in place when the time comes".
"We have already come a long way in that direction with the addition on new weights and power racks, renovating the field house both inside and out, improving the turf buildings, new uniforms, adding collegiate height goal post to the best maintained field in Tennessee, brand new sound system at the stadium and a stronger schedule to prepare us for better opponents" he said. He also said "with your help and support we will continue to redefine our limits and finish strong". Coach continued by thanking everyone in the community for their support in his first two years at the helm.
If you remember his visit last year he emphasized that he had began a new program at Union City, and he did not want anyone on his team that was not there to make sacrifices for the team and had better be ready to play football and build the program back to the respected program it once was. Apparently it has worked. Coach Bowling came to Union City in March of 2008, and has since taken a stumbling program to once again heights traditional to the Union City program, holding a record last year of 10-2, and taking the program to play-offs, something that had eluded them for the past two or three years. He has begun this year with an very respectable 3-1 record and is expecting another very good season.
He brought with him last Friday his Senior Squad, consisting of Caleb Alexander, Will Arnold, Rance Barnes, Zack Cavness, Ronnie Fair, Stevie Gossett, Carlo Guercia Sammarco, Keenen Luellen, Lee McCord, Josh Nicks, Antuwan Powell, Kendrick Price, Dominic Watson, Jacob Worley and Senior Football Manager, Dewain Dewalt. Along with the senior players were the Senior Cheerleader Captain Katy Crews and Cheerleader Sponsor Laura Kingrey.
Also in attendance was his Coaching Staff, Brandon Duncan, Mack Moore, Nick Markle and Morgan Cruse.
