The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands

October 2, 2009

Today, Kenton Businessman and Viticulture Farmer Bill Sanderson visits and talks about his hobby - turned new business, Grape Farming in Kenton, TN.

Bill began this venture in 1998 by planting 25 grape vines, the next year he added 25 more and today he has 7,000 vines on 5.3 miles of trellis. This year he sold Kix Brooks of "Brooks and Dunn" and owner of Arrington Winery over 20,000 pounds of French Hybrid grapes and delivered over 32,000 pounds to various wineries in middle and west Tennessee.

Currently, Bill grows five varieties of wine-grapes on 10 acres. Next year he anticipates a yield of 80,000 pounds of the versatile fruit. Future plans include an additional 10 acres, using the latest trellising options, Bill receives yields from 4 to 7 tons per acre. In 4 years he anticipates a yield of almost 250,000 pounds.

Bill is married to Valerie Combs Sanderson, from Covington. They met while attending Lambuth College. They have been married for 29 years and have 3 children, Cerissa, 28, Will, 24 and Garrett. Bill, Valerie and his mother Diane, own and operate a successful family business, C.W. Sanderson’s Furniture and Appliance in Kenton. Bill is an avid marathon runner, having run 29 marathons in 26 states and qualifying for Boston twice.

Next week, Obion County Central Head Football Coach Shawn Jackson was scheduled to be guest speaker, but as of this date has cancelled.

BEGINNING HISTORY OF ROTARY

On Feb. 23, 1905 Chicago Attorney Paul Harris convened the first Rotary Meeting in Room 711 of the Unity Building in Chicago, IL.

In 1907 Rotary of Chicago performed it’s first act of community service. The club called a meeting of civic organizations to establish a committee for installing city comfort stations, or public toilets to improve sanitation.

In 1908 the second Rotary Club was formed in San Francisco and received it’s charter on November 12 of that year. Forming members Homer Wood, Chester H. Woosley and Roy R. Rogers attended the Charter Banquet. Wood was elected President and later became known as father of Rotary on the Pacific Coast.

In 1910 Rotary held it’s first convention in Chicago, August 15-17. Sixty Rotarians attended. Rotary founder Paul Harris presided. At that time Rotary consisted of 15 clubs with over 1,000 members throughout the United States.

In 1911 Rotary launched the National Rotarian (later The Rotarian) with Chesley Perry the editor. The first issue appeared in January of that year.

Last week, Cathy Waggoner, Administrator of the Promethean Foundation visited and gave Rotarians an up-date on the progress of the program, which takes at-risk children from birth to five years and affords them the opportunity to attend pre-school day care in order to study the affects it has on these children form low or moderate incomes.

She explained the process or screening these children, by looking at family backgrounds, family incomes, how the parents of these children were raised and other criteria, which could put these children at-risk for a proper education and normal progress in a normal school atmosphere and aid in the child’s character development, she put heavy emphasis on "Character Development".

She said that 90% of every dime sent to the foundation must be spent on the children, she also said the day-care payment every week is around 30 thousand dollars. The cost to each child of the program varies depending on the age of the child, varying from around $260.00 to around $300.00.

Cathy brought with her two of her staff, Day Care Director, Lori Suiter and Education Specialist, Jenny Virgin.

Lori took the podium and explained her duties in the program, saying that, "I pay the Bills, Thank You". She is the business administrator, and her main job is to make sure that the children get the 90% of the funding mentioned above. She also mentioned the fact that there have been computers put in every site they use for the children’s education.

Jenny, the education specialist, spoke briefly of her duties in the program and said, she spent most of her time in the classrooms, asking herself how she would want her classrooms run if she were the teacher there. She said her main tool was progress notes, which she uses throughout the child’s presence in the program to evaluate that child’s progress and make recommendations.
