The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands

November 06, 2009

Today, next Wednesday, November 11th is the day we honor our Veterans of this Great Nation. In keeping with that day, our newest member, Sergeant First Class Keith Dunning takes to the podium and helps us reflect on some of the happenings which created these gallant men and women and the importance of this day.

Sgt. Dunning is the National Guard recruiter in Union City. He has been our local recruiter for the last five years. Keith’s area consists of Union City and all of Obion County and a portion of Weakley County.

Keith grew up in Gleason, where he attended school and had a normal childhood. His family’s love for music has played a big part of his life and continues to to do so to this day. His Father and Grandfather had a large influence on him in the music field, and Keith has mastered three different instruments, drums, bass guitar and piano.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1983, and spent nine years to the day in that branch of the service. After discharge he came back home and settled in Martin, with plans to retire at age 41, but due to factors beyond his control he had to change his plans, being a single parent of his daughter Erika, he decided retirement would have to wait.

After a period of time at MTD and Rent-A-Center in Martin, he decided the military was to be his choice for the rest of his career so he joined the Tennessee National Guard. Since joining the Guard he has obtained an Associate’s Degree in Physical Science from Excalliber University in New York. He also owns his own karaoke business, which he started in 2006, so music is still playing a big part in his life.

Next week, we again go into the future a bit and hear from our two local head basketball coaches, with up-dates and predictions for the up-coming season. Shane Sisco, Union City Boys Head Coach and Eddie Suiter, Union City’s Girls Head Coach visit and get our attention turned toward the round ball season for the up-coming year.

Coach Sisco is a 1988 graduate of Union City High School, and was a member of the UTM Men’s Basketball Team from 1988-1992. He was a Graduate Assistant at UT Knoxville from 1992-1993. He has been teaching and coaching 16 years and has been at Union City High School for the past 10 years, recording some very impressive numbers for that program, he is starting his 11th year as Head Coach at U.C.

Coach Suiter is a graduate of Martin Westview High School, attending UTM after High School earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1998 with a Major in Education. He has been teaching and coaching for the past 16 years and is in his first year as the Head Coach of Union City High School Girls Basketball Program.

Last week, Rotarians had the pleasure of having four ladies as program guests, they were, Teresa Vinson, local hospital contact for breast cancer awareness, Melanie Nicks, registered radiology technologist, Amy Harris, nurse practitioner, and Lyda Rice, local business person.

These ladies were on hand to up-date and share experiences detecting, treating and dealing with breast cancer.

Melanie Nicks was the first speaker, sharing some of her personal life and also spoke of the mammography suite at the local hospital. She spoke of the renovation which has gone on at the suite, and how they had made it as comfortable and as home-like as possible for the patients. She also spoke of the new computer radiography, which is a new digital mammography, this machine allows the radiologist to magnify, lighten or darken the image and read the material much faster and with greater accuracy. The second piece of equipment she spoke of was computer aided detection, which allows the radiologist to hone in on a area of interest, and alerts them to points of problems. The third piece of equipment she described was the new biopsy piece, which she said they were very excited about. It allows the patient to be able to have a biopsy taken without being put to sleep it is virtually painless, and leaves very little scarshe said.

Amy Harris spoke briefly of the risk of breast cancer in men. She said compared to women it is very rare, comparing them she said 1 in 8 women have a chance of having breast cancer and 1 in 1000 in men. She said a man being diagnosed with breast cancer has the same prognosis as a woman, it depends on the stage of the cancer. The treatment is the same, but in most cases women are diagnosed earlier than men, therefore the prognosis is not as good as the cancer which is diagnosed in the early stage. She also touched on the importance of a person staying local to have their treatments of the disease.

Lyda Rice, who is a survivor of breast cancer put us through a brief test of our contact with cancer through self, family or friend, by the time she finished her test everyone in the room was standing. She said everyone has been touched by the disease in some way and reminded us of how important it is to be tested for the disease and how important early detection is.
