Last week
, Union City Rotarian’s dedicated the Friday meeting to our Veterans and in doing so, we had the pleasure of having our newest member, Sgt. Keith Dunning, Union City’s National Guard Recruiter, doing the honors.
Keith had a very informing power-point presentation, but before he went into his presentation, he took a few moments to honor the Veterans present at the meeting. He also spoke sadly and briefly of the Viet-Nam Vets and the way they were treated upon their return to the States.
He explained the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day, saying that both honor veterans, but Memorial Day honors those already passed and Veterans Day honors those still living.
Keith displayed some statistics on past wars, starting with WWI, total Service Members world wide were 4,730,000, with 53,402 deaths, other deaths Non Theater, 63,000, non mortal wounding 204,002, and in 2008 there were 3 living veterans of that war. Next he pointed out the date of 1941 and the beginning of WWII, saying that total Service Members were 16,112,566, Battle Deaths 291,557, Other Deaths, Non Theater, 113,842, Non Mortal Wounding, 671,846, with 2,498,000 Living WWII Veterans in 2008. In his viewing of the equipment that was available to the effort during WWII, as compared to what is available today, he said "WWII Veterans were heroes, and he was very proud to be here in the presence of some of them".
The stats on the Korean War were 5,720,000 Service People, Battle Deaths, 33,741, Other Deaths, Theatre 2,833, Other Deaths, Non-Theatre 17,642, Non Mortal Wounding, 103,284, and 2,400,000 Living Veterans in 2008.
He discussed some of the history of Veterans Day, saying that it first began as Armistice Day in 1919 under President Wilson, and in 1938, Nov. 11, Armistice Day was declared a legal federal holiday by the Congress of the United States. He said in 1954 President Eisenhower changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day, and in 1968 Congress passed the Monday Holiday Law, which established the 4th Mon. in Oct. as the day we Observed the Holiday, and in 1975 Congress returned the date to Nov. 11th, which brings it to date.
