The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands
December 11, 2009
Today, we give a warm welcome to some talented youth, as we enjoy our annual visit from the Union City Elementary School Choirs.
This year, due to two weeks of no meetings by Union City Rotary, we will hear from both groups on the same day.
The Chorus Kids, consisting of 2nd and 3rd grades are under the direction of Linda Harrelson. Linda was born and raised in Alabama, received her degrees from The University of Montevallo and Jacksonville State University. She has the unfortunate luck of being married to one of our own, Jim Harrelson, they have 2 sons, Keith and Matt. She has spent most of her adult life teaching in the Union City School System.
The Voices of UCES consist of 4th and 5th grade students, under the direction of Nolin Cloyd. Mrs. Cloyd is in her 9th year of teaching in the City School System. Her teaching duties consist mostly of music, which include Elementary music at UCES, and she is also one of the directors of the Union City Middle School band. She is married to Michael Cloyd, who is employed at the local hospital. They have two children, a daughter Farin and a son Oliver, who attend Union City Schools.
Next week, we will hit the political scene, as Senator Roy Herron of Dresden will be on hand and deliver the news from Capitol Hill.
Roy is a member of Union City Rotary along with other worthwhile organizations. As we have all heard, Roy had thrown his hat into the Governor’s Race of our fair state, until the surprise announcement of our own John Tanner deciding not to run for another term as our representative in Washington. He then turned his attention to that office and has decided to run for Congress instead.
Roy has worked hard for his district, and also has been a hard worker for his community, serving in various civic organizations, his county and the youth of his community, as he is an adult leader with the Boy Scouts and his youngest son will soon join Roy and his two other sons as an Eagle Scout, which will be the seventh Eagle Scout in their family.
He won his seat on thhe Senate 23 years ago after his friend Ned Ray McWherter vacated it, ran and won the Governor’s race for the State of Tennessee. In that 23 years he has only missed one legislative session, the day his youngest son was being born.
Three weeks ago
, the new Obion County Central Girls Head Basketball Coach, Lyle LaRue visited and brought with him the senior cheerleading squad, who he said had qualified for the National Competition in Orlando Florida he also had his senior basketball girls with him. He let them stand and introduce themselves. He mentioned the boy’s basketball squad, and said that team was going to be very interesting to watch, as they have brought speed into the game. He said his girls were going to follow the same game plan, though they were not going to be as fast as the boys, but their game plan was going to put all the pressure they could on the opposing teams. He also said he had some very good assets as far as size is concerned and he planned to take full advantage of that.
He commented on the help he had received from other coaches at OCCHS, saying they had taken him under their wings and directed him in how things were done at the new school.
He also spoke of his youngest son Seth, who just turned 2 saying he could throw a baseball as hard as his 6 year old and his 4 year old, and how he surprised his Mother-In-Law when she asked him to throw the ball to her.
Coach LaRue went into some of the expectations he had of his girls, and the order of priorities in their lives, including grades, homework and then basketball.
His personal priority for his team he said was "we want to play hard, we want to play smart, we want to have fun and we want to play together".
