Today,
Director of Research, Office of the Provost, at Union University, Randy Phillips visits. Randy holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Union University, along with a Master of Arts in Marriage, Family, and Child Therapy, from Phillips Graduate Institute (formerly The California Family Study Center) & Azusa Pacific University, and a Doctor of Philosophy, Rehabilitation from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
He has a diverse career as evidenced by clinical and professional service in human services, business, higher education, community involvement and professional associations, as he is a Licensed Marital and Family Therapist & Licensed Professional Councelor/MHSP, Clinical Member AAMFT; AAMFT Approved Supervisor, Supervised a variety of medical and mental health professionals in highly profitable services, Consulted medical corporations in the development of treatment programs, and prepared related budgets, census reports and marketing plans.
Randy is also heavily involved in community, as evidenced by his membership in Jackson Downtown Rotary, where he is a "Paul Harris Fellow". Charter originator of a Union city School System Foundation, Founding board member of Obion Co. Chapter Habitat for Humanity, Former Board member of (STAR Center) rehabilitation service center, service center serving children, teens and adults with intellectual and physical challenges/limitation.
He was duly appointed by Gov. Phil Bredesen, July 11 2007 to the Board for Professional Counselors, Marital & family Therapists and Clinical Pastoral Therapists. Term: July 11, 07 - June 30, 12, and is currently presiding as President of that Board. Also he is Past-President and board member of Tennessee Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and Former consultant to TN. Board of Professional Counselors, Marital and Family Therapists & Pastoral Counselors.
His presentation today is "Renewal out of Rubble", Union University’s recovery from the destruction of the F4 Tornado which struck the campus Feb., 2008.

As we all know May 14 is fast approaching, and is one of the biggest days in Union City Rotary’s year, as Rotary Scholarship Day rolls around.
Again, we owe a debt of gratitude to the members of the Scholarship Committee for their tireless, time consuming efforts in screening the ever growing list of candidates. This year there were 375 applications.
2010 marks the 29th year the program has been in existence, and since that time, Union City Rotary has handed out in access of $3,587,000.00, to deserving students of both school systems in Obion County.
Please let the committee know how much we appreciate them and their efforts. Committee Members are; Roger Williams, Chairman, Richard Graham, Clint Joyner, Ron Green, Bob Regen, Steve Vaughn, Gary Houston, Barry Keathley, Dave Schlager, Al Creswell, and Kurt Baggett.
Last week,
before the scheduled program, Union City Rotarians had the pleasure of meeting the Union City School System’s "Teachers of The Year". They were introduced by the principals of the three schools. Michael Paul Miller, Principal of U.C. Ele. Introduced Susanne Doss from that school, Dan Boyken, Principal of U.C. Middle School introduced Brandon Tanner, and Wes Kennedy introduced the High School Recipient, Kim Sherwood.
Assistant District Governor Audrie Roberts was on hand to introduce the program for the day, which consisted of a Group Study Exchange Team from Rotary District 2430 in Turkey.
Team Leader, Sedef Bircan was the first to use a series of an on-screen picture presentation showing where Turkey is located on the Globe. Along with her presentation, she pointed out some points of interest in her country, saying at the present time, Turkey is in the process of celebrating their Independence, much like our 4th of July.
She proceeded by speaking of the culture of the country, saying that much like the United States, Turkey depends greatly on it’s agriculture industry for survival, as well as the growing tourism attraction, which the country is promoting more vigorously.
Ms. Bircan, by photos, introduced her family and their background, including a brief history of how she grew up and where she was educated.
Next speaker on the team was Sevda Ozcan, a Language Instructor and Archeologist. Using the screen, she pointed out where she was born, points of interest there, and introduced her family and what the family did for a living in Turkey.
Then came Eda Yasa, also an Instructor, and Ph.D. Candidate of Cag University. Eda introduced her family, giving background and also how the family made their living.
Dilek Senturk, Owner and Business Manager of an Education Center in Turkey. She also used the picture presentation to introduce her family and their background.
Gutay Yildiran, the only male in the group, introduced himself as Classical Guitarist, Guitar Lecturer and Metallurgical Engineer, along with family intros.

Congress ordered the motto " In God We Trust" be placed on American currency in 1864. The phrase replaced "E Pluribus Unum" as the "official motto of the United States in 1956.
