The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands
June 18, 2010
Today, we welcome Christy Passmore, yet another Union City High School graduate who has successfully climbed the ladder of success in the business world.
Christy, for the last two decades, has played a key role in the fundraising and philanthropy that has helped place Vanderbilt University among the country’s top 20 universities. She raised funds to create and build the Tennessee Lions Eye Center and the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, and for eight years, she led the day-to-day operation of the university’s Shape the Future campaign, with its historic goal of $1.75 billion. She now serves as the chief fundraiser for Vanderbilt Athletics and is one of only two women currently serving in this role among Southeastern Conference schools.
Christy earned the bachelor of science degree in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education from UTM she taught in the Obion County Public School System for three years. Intrigued with politics, she moved to Nashville and earned a staff role in a United States Senate campaign which evolved into a 5 year progression of campaigns and political staff roles in communications, fundraising and grassroots organization. She spent some of her early career with the American Heart Assoc. In Dallas, TX, before moving to Nashville.
Christy will share some of her career insights and experiences - and talk about how the lessons learned growing up in Union City are still ones she uses today.
Next week, Union City Rotary begins another fiscal year, as we install new officers and directors.
Past District Governor Glen VanDefore will be on hand to do the honors of the installation process.
Looking back over th past twelve months, the club has every right to pat itself on the back, considering the huge success of the many projects taken on and the awards President Barnes received for the club while attending the recent district conference. Also after loosing several members for various reasons, the club ended the year with a net gain in membership. The weekly programs over the past year, under the direction of President Elect Gary Houston, have been excellent to say the least.

Last week, The Union City Daily Messenger’s long time Senior Sports Editor, Mike Hutrchens visited as guest speaker and left Rotarian’s with some interesting facts and plenty of humor.
Mike has spent the last 27 years covering area sports, as well as national sports for the local paper and is considered by most the best around.
He began by praising Union City Rotary for their interest in local youth, especially the large amount of money the club has presented these high school graduates helping finance their higher education.
As he continued, Mike used a couple of members, much the way Art Sparks can by touching some sensitive areas in a humerous way. He also had praise for these same people, complimenting them on their community service and their help with the local athletic programs.
He touched on some of the history of his tenure with The Messenger, saying he had been very fortunate to have been able to have a job which offered the opportunities he has experienced, such as being able to sit down with so many of his sports heros, interviewing them and traveling to sports events which would be the envy of anyone who follow sports activities. He named just a few of these sports figures, such as Bart Star, Johnny Unitus, Chiquel O’Neil, Sammy Sosa, Payton Manning and many more. And the sports events he has had the priviledge of attending, such as Wrigley Field, The Masters, South Bend watching outstanding football, golf and many other sports.
He said in the beginning it was for low pay and odd hours but the benefits were worth it. He also stepped back in time to the period he did some coaching of his own here in the youth baseball program, and had a few humerous stories from that place in time.
Mike spent a few moments at the expense of Former Coach and now Rotary President, Randy Barnes. He didn’t stop there though, as he continued, most all of the local coaches, past and present, were brought into the program, had they all been present, they would have probably been ready for Mike to finish at any time.
