Building Communities - Bridging Continents

July 09, 2010

Today, Rotary Member Art Sparks does the honors, as he takes to the podium and installs two of Union City Rotary Members into that prestigious group of "Paul Harris Fellows". This is an honor bestowed upon members who have met some strenuous qualifications as they join that elite group.

The name originated from Paul Harris, one of the original four members who founded Rotary in Chicago in 1905. These four men saw the need for an organization to promote community improvement, and in their first meeting decided to rotate the meetings among the offices of the four organizers, thus the name Rotary Club. Also on today’s program, Mike Cox joins Art and does what these two do best. We can expect to see some new members squirm in their seats as the pair have, as always, done some extensive research, and you can be sure nothing will be left out as they roast a few of our latest members.

If you look in Webster's great book of definitions, you will find the term "Roast", it says to heat, or ridicule, with the synonyms, cook, heat, parch, boil, broil, scorch, simmer, etc. You can bet Art and Mike will use all the above.

Next week, Rotarian’s can look forward to a visit from Larry Snider, and an update on the much anticipated "Discovery Park of America".

After a some what of a delay in construction, the park is well on it’s way to becoming a reality for our community.

Larry will bring with him a PowerPoint presentation with images of the new building design, the site plan and exhibits being planned for inside Discovery Center.

Larry is a native of Weakley County having grown up in Sharon. He graduated from UT Martin with a degree in Business Administration and from UT Knoxville with a Master’s in Industrial Management. After getting his Master’s Degree, he joined Eastman Chemical Company, a division of Eastman Kodak in Kingsport, Tennessee. He worked in a number of Corporate Communications, Public relations and Marketing Jobs for Eastman. When he retired from Eastman in 2005, he was Director of Global Marketing Communications.

He has been working with the Kirklands and Development of Discovery Park for the past for the past two years.

Last week, as a result of last week, U.C. Rotary has one new face and other familiar faces moving to different seats at the head table, as Gary Houston took over the job vacated by Randy Barns, and will lead the club as the President for the next year, Al Creswell took over the job of President Elect and Program Chairman for the up-coming year, Jody Kizer was sworn in as Al’s replacement and Sgt. At Arms was taken over by Richard Graham, Richard’s duties were taken over by Chuck Doss and two New Directors came on board in the form of Dr. Sam Bradberry and Craig Atwell.

Past District Governor, Glen Vanderford and Assistant District Governor, Audrey Roberts were on hand doing the honors and challenging new officers.

Before the swearing in ceremonies, Audrey spent some time reminiscing the past year complimenting the officers who were stepping down, and spoke of the history of U.C. Rotary, from its beginning in 1936, reminding us that the club will soon be 75 years old. She also spoke of changes since 1936, mainly referring to technology advancements, such as cell phones, and the wide range of capabilities of this small piece of equipment, which she said has changed our lives dramatically.

Audrey then introduced Glen Vanderford, who expressed his appreciation to U.C. Rotary for all the club has done for Rotary, he congratulated out-going President Randy Barnes on his outstanding year in office and expressed his anticipation of the coming year with President Houston. He also expressed appreciation of the club’s participation in the Rotary Exchange Program, the Rotary Scholarship Program, the Rotary Tour Group, sponsored locally and the overall generosity of of the club. With this in mind, he expanded accolades to Rotary International and the success of the many projects carried on all over the world, especially the polio eradication program going on at the present.

He and Audrey then called on the new officers to come forward and the Oath of Office was administered to the group.
