Building Communities - Bridging Continents

August 6, 2010

Today, we welcome Union City Mayor and Union City Rotary Member Terry Hailey on a rare appearance to our meeting. He is expected to enlighten Rotary Members on matters before the City Council at the present and bring us up-to-date on current projects which the city is dealing with now, and in the not too distant future.

Terry has been Union City’s Mayor since 1988, along with the duties of Mayor, he also has been affiliated with Union City’s popular radio station, WENK since 1967. He grew up in neighboring Troy, Tennessee, graduating from Obion County Central in 1967, also graduating from University of Tennessee Martin in 1971. He began his adult career as an English Teacher at Obion County Central for three years, 1971-1974. In 1987 Terry became a Speech Instructor and UT Martin, a position he holds to date.

He was elected to the Union City Council in 1984, and elected Mayor four years later. Terry also serves as Organist for the First United Methodist Church here in Union City, a job he has held since 1987. He is Past President of Union City Rotary, Union City Jaycees and Tennessee Association of Broadcasters.

He married his wife Mitzi 38 years ago, they have Three boys, Chad and Travis, who now live in Nashville, and Bret who resides in Chattanooga. He is an avid fisherman and enjoys Water Sports during the summer months.

Next week, as Obion County Fair Time approaches, Union City Rotary will get a preview of some of the talent which will appear on the grounds that week.

The Obion County Fair Youth Musical group, which is inspired by the hit television series "Glee", will be on hand displaying the talent of forty-four local teens with outstanding vocals and amazing dance moves.

They are under the direction of Ryan Stone , who has a decade of service having served as assistant director for nine years. Coming back for their fifth consecutive year are vocal director Jamie Wore, assistant vocal director Zoe Ramage and visual director Jared Hamlin. Filling the spot of assistant director with her second year of service is Dawn Tittle. Due to such a large turn out for this year’s show, they have added two new staff members. They are choreographer Carolina Smith and production assistant Krystal Worrell.

Phyllis Rauchle serves as producer of the team. She has worked with the Fair Association and youth musical for 15 years serving in numerous roles.

Last Week, Mike and Art were at it again. It was roast day for new members, and that they did. First on the list for Mike Cox was Mark McBride, President and CEO. for Cox Oil, Mikes Family Business here in Union City. Mike described Mark’s young baseball days, saying something about they might have used a calendar to time his his ability to run from home plate to first base. Then there seemed to be a problem in his youth learning to chew tobacco, which Mike reminded him of. Mike went into his high school years, bringing up a few incidents during that period, which Mark had long forgotten.

Mike covered his adult life bringing us up to date at his present job at Cox Oil, mentioning something about "KY Jelly" which was brought up apparently during the job interview. Mike ended the prosecution by informing the group of an incident which happened in Nashville while working for E.W. James Co.

Mike then called Dr. Kofi Nuako, Dr. Nuako’s profession left things wide open for Mike, and he took full advantage of it. Mike did get serious for a moment, by reminding Dr. Nuako that all this was in fun, because as he said, "I’m one of your patients".

Mike briefly covered Dr. Nuako's college days, also sharing some of his own experiences as a patient of Kofi’s while receiving his examination, it seems Dr. Nuako sent Mike’s wife a note during the procedure, telling her she was wrong, Mike’s head could not be found anywhere in his colon.

Then it Was Art’s turn, he called Randall Duwayne Barnes to the front, just to watch his face turn red, then let him sit down. Wes Kennedy, Dan Boykin and Michael Paul Miller to the front please, much to their relief he let Dan and Michael Paul sit down, but not before mentioning Curly, Mo and Larry.

Wes had to stay, and went through much the same as the previous two, with Art bringing up experiences of his past which you can be sure he has spent much of his adult life trying to keep under cover.

I asked Wes after the meeting how he was, he informed me that an appointment with Dr. Nuako and an appointment with Art were much the same, the difference being he didn’t have to drink all that liquid before last Fridays appointment.
