Today, Monday kicks off the beginning of 2010 Obion County Fair Week. However, today Union City Rotary gets a sneak preview of some of the talent on display next week, as we welcome the Obion County Fair Youth Musical Group.
The group is inspired by the hit television series "Glee" and is titled "Fairshow". This year’s Fairshow displays the talent of fourty-four local teens with outstanding vocals and amazing dance moves.
They are under the direction of Ryan Stone, who has a decade of service to the group, after spending nine years as Assistant Director. Back for their fifth consecutive year are vocal director Jamie Worrell, assistant vocal director Zoe Ramage and visual director Jared Hamlin. Filling the spot of assistant director with her second year of service is Dawn Tittle. Due to such a large turn out for this year’s show, they have added two new staff members. They are Choreographer Carolina Smith and production assistant Krystal Worrell.
Phyllis Rauchle serves as producer of this creative team. Phillis has worked with the Obion County Fair Association and youth musical for 15 years serving in numerous roles. She would like to take the opportunity to express her gratitude to U.C. Rotary for the opportunity of the group performing for us and also invite everyone to the fair next week for their performance. They will be performing two shows nightly Wednesday through Saturday.
Next week, 2010 Football Season is fast approaching, as U.C. Rotary kicks off it’s annual round of visits from area coaches. Next Friday it will be last years Tennessee Class A State Champion and Coach of the Year, Union City’s own Darren Bowling. Darren has been Head Coach at Union City for the past three years. Prior to coming to Union City, he he had spent 18 years coaching in Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee, one of those Tennessee jobs was with Obion County Central, where he took that team to the playoffs for the first time in school history. In his brief stay at Union City, he has taken that team from as they say "Rags to Riches". When he took the team over three years ago, Union City was in unfamiliar territory, as the Tornado Football Team has always been a powerhouse to be dealt with in the area year after year, however the few years leading up to Coach Bowling, there had been some what of a let-down in performance after our own, Coach Randy Barnes left the program. However in his short stay, the program is back on top and this year is expected to be little different, but if rumors are true, we can expect to see a bit of a change in the offense, with a bit more of an Ariel Attack than last year.
Last Week,
President Houston and President Elect Al Creswell presented Mark McBride his membership packet, along with challenges which are administered to all new members. It was also announced Derick Ziegler has submitted his resigned from U.C. Rotary, due to job movement.
Union City Mayor Terry Hailey was guest speaker last week, and brought Rotary Members up-to-date on the "State of the City".
Before he went into his main topic, he spoke briefly of his first run for City Council, and the nickname he received from Jimmy Jones "Landslide" due to the five vote margin of victory in his first run for office, he also recapped some experiences on the City Council before being elected Mayor. He shared some of the comical happenings during his long connection with Union City.
Then it was on to facts and figures for the city, first it was budget, which he said was 58.9 million which included all departments, street fund, general fund, crematory, drug enforcement, hotel motel tax, solid waste, school system, water sewer, etc. He explained the City’s income, how and where it is collected.
He said the City of Union City has 127 employees, he broke that total down to different departments and the cost of each department to the city. He also informed us that the city has had to dip into the fund balance for the past few years, and are now on a pay-as-you-go plan. He also had high praise for Interim City Manager Kathy Dillon.
What do we owe was the next topic, he informed us that the city was in debt to the total of 11,440,000,00, which does not include the amount owed to Obion County for the Spec Bldg.
He broke the above total down as to amount owed on different projects.
Terry then turned salesman, describing projects the city had for sale at the present time, which included 500 acres in Industrial Park Land and Spec Building, which he said he had heard there were people interested, but to this date no one had gotten serious.
He ended with a question-answer period, this brought several interesting questions, which were handled in very good form.
