Today, you can be sure Union City Rotary will extend a warm welcome to today’s guest, being Union City Golden Tornado’s Head Football Coach, Darren Bowling.
You can be sure, no one here today has forgotten the dramatic season put together last year by this coach his assistants and his never-say-die team.
You can be sure this year’s team may or may not come away with all the marbles, but you can be sure Coach Bowling will get every ounce of talent, hustle, and muscle out of every player, assistant coach, trainer and all other personnel associated with the program.
After graduating from Greenville Christian Academy in 1986, Coach Bowling received his BSE from Delta State Univ. In 1991. Since that time he has coached at Lee Academy in Clarksdale, MS, Greenville Christian School, Greenville, MS, Inianola Academy, Inianola, MS, Silliman High School, Clinton, LA, Obion County Central High School, and Dyersburg High School. During that time he has amassed numerous awards and citations in the football ranks.
Since taking over the reigns at UCHS, the Tornado’s have looked like the teams of the past. In his first year, they posted a 10-2 record, and last year it was 12-2 and of course the Single A State Championship. Coach Bowling has an overall record of 129-66.
Next week, UTM’s Head Football Coach, Jason Simpson returns with a preview of the much anticipated 2010 Skyhawk Football Season.
Jason has been at UTM since 2006, and it didn’t take him long to move the program into the upper echelon of the Ohio Valley Conference. After just four seasons, Simpson sports a .565 overall (26-20) winning percentage, the highest in the 10-team conference and 63-year-old league.
Coach Simpson is 20-11 in the OVC and has one OVC championship to his credit and came within a field goal of a second championship in 2008. He led the Skyhawks to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) postseason for the first time in school history in 2006 and his teams have annually been ranked among the top 25 in the nation.
After posting an 8-4 record in 2008 and being ranked in the top 25, the Skyhawks posted a 5-6 overall record in 2009 and sported a 4-4 OVC record. The Skyhawks finished strong by winning three of its last four games.
The Skyhawks open the 2010 season Sept. 4th on "The Hill" at Knoxville with the Volunteers. It should be a very exciting season!
Last Week,
Union City Rotarians were somewhat spellbound, with the talent displayed by a young musical group known as "The Obion County fair Youth Musical Group". This group presented a show that displayed so much energy and vocal talent that, if it were bottled and distributed, there would be doctors, chiropractors, and physical fitness businesses looking for work.
The group presented several songs, along with choreography, with several of the group of 44 youngsters performing solos and duets which were second to none, professionally or otherwise. As a matter of fact, before the show was over they were receiving standing ovations from Rotarians present. And if you missed it, you can be sure, taking nothing away from Al on the rest of the programs for the year, you will be hard pressed to witness another program this year that will top it.
As mentioned the group consisted of 44 teens, under the direction of Staff Members, Producer, Phyllis Rauchle, Vocal Director, Jamie Worrell, Visual Director, Jared Hamlin, Assistant Director, Dawn Tittle, Assistant Director, Zoe Ramage, Choreographer, Carolina Smith, and Production Assistant, Krystal Worrell.
There were several guests on hand for the program, consisting mostly of parents and grandparents of the members of the chorus .
They began the program with a Duet, with Chorus joining in of their rendition of ""Forever Yours", next a fabulous performance of "Find Me Somebody to Love", "Keep Holding On", "Lean On Me" and a finale consisting of a medley of "Small Town Girls" and "Don’t Stop Believing"
The main purpose of the group being assembled wasto perform at the Obion county Fair this week. They have already had several appearances there, and will perform tonight and tomorrow night at the fair. The performances are at 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm. Last week Rotarians received a special invitation to enjoy the musical as often as possible.
