Last Week,
there was no meeting of Union City Rotary. However last Thursday Night, a large group of Rotarians and others gathered here at the Hampton Centr`e for an outstanding program offered by the Obion County Distinguished Speaker’s Foundation.
Pat Day, World Renown Horse Jockey was on hand as the speaker for the event. As the evening progressed, the audience was spellbound by Pat’s re-cap of his career, where it had taken him, and how his life had changed during that time.
Mr. Day was introduced by Clint Joyner, giving a brief history of his outstanding career and the unbelievable number of races he had won.
Pat began by speaking briefly of his early years, being born and raised in Colorado and how he got into the profession of horse racing. He recapped his career, saying it was an up and down experience, due to the abuse of drugs and alcohol. Then in 1984 he turned his life over to Jesus Christ and he never looked back. He said the Lord has used him in many ways since that time and he gave his maker all the credit for whatever success he has enjoyed. His testimony was very touching and left the audience with a new outlook on life to say the least.
Two weeks ago, Union City Rotary had the pleasure of welcoming our District Governor, Jim Springer and Assistant Governor, Audrey Roberts. Audrey was on hand for the purpose of introducing Governor Springer.
Governor Springer outlined the territory of District 6760, which includes 3,400 Rotarians, and 62 Clubs. He gave details of the oldest club in the district, Nashville, chartered in 1914, and the youngest club being the Pickwick Landing Club, chartered on 2007.
He reminded us of the purpose of Rotary, and Rotarians using the ongoing challenge and Rotary Slogan "Service Above Self", saying as you give more of yourself to your club, your community and your family, yourself becomes less important and you yourself become more and more important.
