Last Week,
Keith Riley, Tyson Foods Obion County Complex Manager visited along with other members of the staff of the local complex.
Keith began by filling us in a bit of Tyson’s history, saying John Tyson founded the company in 1935. He owned a place called Tyson’s Feed & Seed Store. For some reason, Keith said John got the idea he would load up a truck load of chickens and take them to Chicago. Having made $235.00 profit on that load of chickens he took to Chicago, sparked the beginning of what is known world wide today as Tyson Foods.
In the 1940’s he opened a hatchery and began furnishing birds for local growers, in 1955 he built the first processing plant for the company in Springdale AR., in 1958 he purchased and renovated the Berry Street Plant in Arkansas, which is where Keith was working before coming to Union City. He also said the Obion County Complex is the only complex in the Tyson company which has been built from the ground up. The plant was completed in 1996, the same year they got a commitment from McDonalds, and therefore the Chicken Nugget, which began coming off the line in 1997.
He then began a power point presentation, showing the stats of the plant, which included growth, how the chickens were processed, what percentage the fast food chain, McDonalds plays at the facility and changes the food industry is experiencing as far as how the processing of the meat has changed in the past few years. The presentation also pointed out the impact the payroll of the local plant has on our local economy.
He went into detail covering the operations of the grain facility in So. Fulton, explaining that the mill purchases 100% of their grain locally, and produce about 4,200 tons of chicken feed per week, and has a capacity to produce about 9,500 tons per week.
The local facility boasts of 54 Broiler Farms with a total of 267 houses, three pullet farms with 4 houses per farm, and 4 breeder farms with 2 houses per farm. From these facilities, there are 644,000 birds processed each week, which turns into 4,121,600 lbs of processed meat during that same time period. A portion of this meat goes into 2.8 million McChicken Sandwiches and 3,266,800 McNuggets per week.
