Next week, we look forward to a visit from Jeremy Fair, National Collegiate Agriculture Ambassador.
Jeremy is a senior Agriculture Education major at the University of Tennessee Martin. He grew up on a family farm in Newbern, TN and continues to be very active in the agriculture industry. He served as a Tennessee Association FFA State Officer in 2009-10, and is currently serving as a Notional Collegiate Agriculture Ambassador. This year in addition to his studies at UTM, he is traveling around West Tennessee, Western Kentucky, and the Bootheel of Missouri presenting presentations about our nation’s most essential industry, Agriculture. He will graduate in May and plans to teach agriculture at an area high school as well as pursue a Maters Degree in Agriculture Education, Leadership, and Education from the University of Tennessee.
Last Week, U. S. Air Force Captain Bart Doyle, who was home on leave, and between jobs with the Air Force, so to speak, visited Rotary, along with his parents, Tim and Robyn Doyle and his grandparents.
Captain Doyle, who is a pilot with the Air Force, brought with him a power point presentation, showing what life is about on a day-to-day operation in Iraq, being an air trooper and supporting the war effort in Iraq.
The Plane he flew in Iraq was a C-130. He went into detail as to the routes he flew, either delivering supplies to ground troops, parts and equipment to other air bases, or troops for relief efforts. The pictures also described the living conditions of the pilots and crew members while on these foreign bases.
Captain Doyle said "I get alerted at 2:45 AM for a mission, then it is my responsibility to get my crew up and get them ready for that day’s mission". He described the equipment he and his crew had to wear on these missions, including mostly safety and survival gear in case of an attack, and or, crash landings. Then it’s on to Intel, where he and his crew are briefed on the day’s mission, what you could expect, threats you might encounter, and where the hot zones are and how to avoid them. The C-130 plane is the smallest of the transports he said, but this enabled him to go into small air strips where the bigger plans cant land.
The last few minutes of Captain Doyle’s presentation described his new assignment, which will take him to Florida where he will be flying a much heavier plane, the AC-130 Gun Ship and will be assigned to Air Force Special Operations Command. He said he will no longer be hauling cargo, but will be providing air support to the guys on the ground.
The question and answer portion brought some very interesting questions. Captain Doyle’s answers proved he was very knowledgeable of the task at hand.
