Building Communities - Bridging Continents

November 19, 2010

Today, UTM Women's Head Basketball Coach Kevin McMillan returns for his second visit to U.C. Rotary. Kevin took over as only the eighth head coach of that program last year, after spending most of his coaching career in the high school ranks where he established some unprecedented records in West Tennessee Girl's Basketball. In his early career however, he did spend two seasons as an assistant at Middle Tennessee State under Rick Insell.

In his 17 years as a head coach in high school, he amassed a record of 434-120, while winning one state title and making six trips to the state tournament. McMillan’s teams have also captured 17 district, region and sub-state championships, earning him numerous coaching accolades. He has twice been named the Jackson Sun’s West Tennessee Coach of the Year, in 2009 and 2003, and the district coach of the year 10 times.

At Gibson Co., his most recent stint, Kevin sported a 62-6 record, and an undefeated 35-0 in 2009, including a state championship. At Martin Westview, his record was 195-67 and while at Millington, it was 177-47.

Kevin received his B.A. In math and business from Rhodes, and completed his M.S. In health and human performance at Middle Tennessee in 2007. He and his wife Paige have two sons, Ben and Matt and one daughter Allie.

Next week, there will be no meeting of Union City Rotary, as Rotarian’s, along with others nationwide will bring families and friends together in order to celebrate and give thanks for the Freedoms and Fruits we enjoy as citizens of this "One Nation Under God".

In two weeks, we enter the Christmas Season, as we once again begin welcoming the musical talent of the Voices of Union City Elementary, under the direction of Nolin Cloyd, and December 10, it will be Union City Middle School Chorus under the direction of Linda Harrelson.

Last Week, Rotarian’s and guests were well entertained with both humor and updates on our local basketball programs, when the two head coaches of the programs visited and took the opportunity to throw a few verbal jabs at each other as well as their assistant coaches and even the principal and assistant principal of the local high school.

After being introduced by President Elect Al Creswell, Coach Suiter wasted no time bringing Principal, Wes Kennedy to the attention of the audience. There was a crack about the absence of hair on Coach Sisco’s head and then it was on to the program at hand.

Coach Suiter said he was very excited about being in Union City for his second year. He reflected on last year’s visit, remembering saying what he wanted to do with the program and how he wanted to do it, but it was kind of a learning process and hopefully the learning process is over. He said he had a better understanding of the kids, and the district and competition the program is in.

"The program this year will focus on our commitment and our team’s commitment and making this community proud" he said. He also said "after much discussion with team and coaches we decided we want to be known for is we compete all the time, we are a team with very high character, and we set high standards for our self, but also we are going to work hard all the time, and these things will get us to wherever we want to be in life, not just in basketball".

Before turning the podium over to Coach Sisco, he introduced his Senior Players and Assistant Coaches.

Coach Sisco talked briefly about what the Union City boy’s team is known for, saying last year’s team made some strides, going forward in certain areas and going backward in others. He said this year’s team he thinks will constantly go forward. "This team has worked hard in the weight room and on the floor, but this year we want to become mentally tough", he said. By taking care of the little things will make a better team in the long run, was his philosophy. He said also that " he wants to build this year’s team into a team that will make the community proud".

He ended his presentation by introducing his assistants and his senior players.
