Building Communities - Bridging Continents

December 03, 2010

Today, Union City Rotarians will positively be put into the Christmas Spirit as we welcome this years edition of the "Voices of Union City Elementary School". Each year these kids spend many hours practicing and honing their act to perfection under the direction of Nolin Cloyd in order to bring cheer and the joy of Christmas during the holidays to several events in our community during the Christmas Season.

The Chorus consists of (Fifth Grade), Avery Rodgers, Benjamin Beard, Braylee Boucher, Brittany Contreras, Caroline Martinek, Channing Anderson, Claire Wisener, David Long, Grace Kennedy, Jalyn Coble, Jasmine Bledsoe, Jeffery Donnell, Journee Smith, Kayelee Caudill, Libby Maclin, London Green, Madison Fitts, Mahkia Serrano, Makayle Speed, Molly Beth Blackwell, Nadeja Webb, Nadia Mayberry, Robert Ullrich, Ryanne Kessell, Taylor Crittendon, Ty Long, Wes Sisco and Zaria Robinson.(Fourth Grade), Abby Hightower, Aleigha Beth Keeling, Alex Jefferson, Austin Atwill, Becca Beachum, Brad Schlager, Carson Sinclair, Chloe Cook, Claire Tanner, Claire Thomason, Connor Terrell, Dawson Searcy, Elijah Casey, Gussie Parks, Haden Wilson, Isiah White, Jacob Virgin, Jake Wheeles, Jalen Buford, Jaysen Alfter, Keathley Darnall, Kendraya Maddox, Luke Wohlfarth, Madison Butner, Matthew Ryder, Megan Speed, Miles Odle, Oliver Cloyd, Parker Little, Paul Fuentes, Pierce Kizer, Preston Little, Sam Hopper, Sanaa Davis, Saniah Thompson, Taylor Pikering, Wade Clendenin, Walker Ross, Will Hogan and Will Suiter.

Mrs. Cloyd is in her 10th year of teaching in the Union City School System. Her teaching duties include teaching Elementary music at UCEM, and she is also the director of the newly formed Union City Middle School Chorus. She is married to Michael Cloyd, who works at Baptist Memorial Hospital. They have two children. Their daughter Farin is in 7th grade a U.C. Middle School and their son Oliver is a 4th grader at U.C. Elementary School.

Next week, Mrs Cloyd will return with a different group, consisting of the newly formed Middle School Chorus, mentioned above.

Along with this group there will be a second chorus under the direction of Linda Harrelson, consisting of a group known as Chorus Kids. This group’s members are made up to second and third grade students from Union City Elementary School. These kids also make several appearances during the holidays, such as Chimes for Charity Radio Programs, and different church programs during the Christmas Season.

Mrs. Harrelson is the Music Teacher at Union City Elementary School for the Kindergarten through Third Grade. She has had the misfortune of being married to Fellow Rotarian, Jim Harrelson for the past thirty two years. They have two sons, Keith and Matt. Keith lives and works in Birmingham, Alabama, Matt lives and works in The Woodlands, Texas area. Both Jim and Linda are active in the First United Methodist Church here in Union City.

Two weeks ago, Union City Rotary got a preview of the season, which is now under way, for the UTM Women’s Basketball program. Highly touted Coach Kevin McMillan visited for his second year as head of that program and left us with details of what he expected this year and the exceptional recruiting the program has experienced during the past few months.

Coach McMillan began by reminiscing last year’s visit saying he talked about where the program was going and what he was trying to do as the new coach, so he said "this is kind of a state of the union women’s basketball recap from where we were a year ago". "Last year we had six scholarship players, but we didn’t finish with six, we finished with three scholarship players, the team was 1 and 12 at Christmas and it wasn’t looking very good, as two of my scholarship players decided they did not want to stay with the team, which was fine with me because there was a difference of attitudes between me and these players", he said. One of his assistants literally called his babysitter and asked if she would be interested in joining the team, which she did. He said "the team finished the season with six walk-on’s, and what happened to that team was amazing, we ended up winning 10 of our last 18 games, going from dead last in the conference to 4th, and hosted a game for the first time in 10 years". Along with the wins, Kevin mentioned the short practice time his players got, because of the fear of getting someone hurt with such a shortage of players, and the players attitude, because they knew they could make all the mistakes they wanted and would never be pulled for doing so, because of that shortage.

The balance of his presentation was spent discussing the excellent recruiting class he and his staff have put together, the number of West Tennessee talents this class includes, and the toughest schedule the school has ever had, saying "look forward to much better things coming from the Women’s Basketball Program at UTM".
