Next week, Dr. Bheki Khumalo visits and shares experiences while growing up and getting his early education in South Africa.

After High School and coming to the U.S., he received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at Denison University, Granville Ohio, attended Washington Univeristy in St. Louis, Ohio State University, The University of Virginia, where he received his Masters of Arts in Chemistry, 1995. He received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Barry University Graduate School in Miami also in 1995.

Dr. Khumalo has been affiliated with Baptist Memorial Hospital in Germantown, St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Methodist North Surgery Center, Memphis, Midtown Surgery Center, Memphis, Crittenden Memorial, West Memphis, Delta Medical Center, Memphis, and Forrest City Medical Center, Forrest city AR.

Dr. Khumalo recently took over the practice here in Union City at Raines Foot Clinic.

Last week, the meeting began by Leland Davis taking the podium for the purpose of introducing the Rotary Travel Group for 2011. This is the third year of the program which furnishes junior students from area high schools a trip of a lifetime.

The group keeps growing. In 2009 there were seven travelers, in 2010 there were nine travelers, this year ten lucky students and their chaperones will travel all over Europe, enjoying different scenery, cultures, languages, other students their age and learn to use different currency.

The students who were selected this year from a list of 38 applicants are, Devin Burnside, Hailey Cash, Nick Crumble, Payton Mosley, Breanna Brown and Grant Walton, all of Union City’s Class of 2012. From Obion County Central they are, Julie Mathenia, Catie Stanford, Chelsea Southerland and Megan Cook. For some reason there were no applicants from South Fulton. The Chaperones this year will be Mary Helen and David Johnson. Mrs. Johnson spoke for a few minutes, expressing her appreciation and gratitude for the generosity and the experiences it allows the group.

This year’s selections came from a long list. U.C. Rotary extends it’s appreciation to the selection committee for their tireless and for sure, regretful decisions they have to make to cut the list down to affordable numbers.

The rotary committee this year consisted of Leland Davis, Clay Woods, Tim Shanks, Richard Graham and Kevin Herrell. Others who help the committee include, Gary Houston, Glenda Caudle, Winnie Logan and Vickie Wilkinson.

Then it was on to music. There were several visitors on hand Friday, including many family members of Nolin Cloyd’s Voices of UCES. The kids filled the room with Christmas Joy as the group used their extraordinary talents to hold the attention of all present.

They performed excellent renditions of songs like "In The Spirit", "Oh Come Little Children", "The Turkey Tango", "A Time For Peace", and after a little coaxing from President Houston, ended their program with "A New World Christmas"

RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS ASKED SOME OF OUR MISS AMERICA CONTESTANTS...

Q. What are your feelings on hunger around the World?

A. Whenever I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can’t help but cry. I mean I’d love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff.

Q. How do you feel about smoking tobacco?

A. Smoking kills. If you’re killed, you’ve lost a very important part of your life.
