Today, U.C. Rotarian, Dr. Mike Calfee looses his seat as spectator, as he takes to the podium and shares memories and experiences while on a recent trip to Russia.
Dr. Calfee graduated University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1991 with a major in Biology, a minor in Zoology, and a Second Major in Religious Studies.
In 1991 he entered The University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis, graduating in 1995. He received his Orthopedic Surgery Residency from University of Tennessee’s Campbell’s Clinic, completing that residency in 2000. From July to October of 2000, he was affiliated with that same clinic, receiving his Foot & Ankle Fellowship.
He is Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery by the ABOS, specializing in foot and ankle, general orthopedic surgery with emphasis on total joint replacement, Industrial Injuries, carpal tunnel and hand surgery, sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery.
He has several Professional Society Memberships, including American Board of Orthopedic, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Medical Association and Tennessee Medical Association.
Next week, Mike Roby, of Youth Town and former restaurant owner in Memphis, will be guest speaker. Mike is bringing along Nick Pappas, Executive Director of Youth Town, and one of their members who is currently in their alcohol and drug abuse programs.
Mike is the Director of Development of the organization. He owned a restaurant in downtown Memphis for 15 years and became the Development Director of a Christian Adoption agency in Memphis. Three years ago he came to Youth Town after hearing about it’s incredible success in the rehabilitation of young men and teaching them about God’s love.
Nick Pappas, a graduate of The University of Memphis, and member of that University’s Football Hall of Fame, became Executive Director of Youth Town of Tennessee 20 years ago. Youth Town now serves 250 young men each year with residential alcohol and drug abuse problems, treating them with amazing success. Most of the boys who attend Youth Town become Christians while they are there and literally thousands of young men have been rescued from almost certain destruction because of Nick’s obedience.
Last week, Rotary Member, Administrator and CEO of the local Union City Baptist Memorial Hospital, Brad Parsons, used a slide presentation showing up dates and the ever increasing cost of healthcare across the nation. He also spoke at length about the controversial health care program which was passed last year by our government.
Brad began by recognizing the doctors in the club, which use the local hospital, along with the hospital’s newest board member, our own President, Gary Houston, he also mentioned Rotary Member Jack Parker, who is on the Advisory Council for the hospital.
Then it was on the business at hand, he said "Health Care has been in the limelight, has anyone heard about reform"? He reported that the new Health Care Reform Bill has been ruled unconstitutional twice already, but has been ruled constitutional twice, which means there is a deadlock as to it’s legality.
Brad did say that reform has to be in the making, however if not reformed, it has to be regulated in some manner, due to the escalating costs involved in healthcare today. He used a chart demonstrating the way healthcare has risen over the past few years, saying some charts have an upward trend and then a downward trend, however, healthcare charts have been on such a steady climb, there has to be some way to control it. He mentioned the regulations already in place, and said there were more on the horizon.
He spoke at length about electronic data sources being mandated at the present in all healthcare facilities and how it was going to change the way patients, government and insurance companies would receive bills for services rendered. He said the local hospital is already involved in the changeover and it would be about two years before the local facility would be totally on line.
