Building Communities - Bridging Continents

February 18, 2011

Today, we welcome Mike Roby, Director of Development at Youth Town of Memphis. We will also hear from one of the young men who is enrolled in the program at the present time.

Mike owned and operated a restaurant in downtown Memphis for 15 years , before becoming Development Director of a Christian Adoption agency in Memphis. Three years ago he came to Youth Town after hearing about it’s incredible success in the rehabilitation of young men and teaching them about God’s love. Mike and his wife Mena have four children.

Mike had originally planned to have Nick Pappas, Executive Director of the program for the past 20 years with him today, however last minute plane connections prevented him from attending.

Youth Town now serves 250 young men each year with residential alcohol and drug treatment with amazing success. Most of the boys who attend Youth Town become Christians while they are there and literally thousands of young men have been rescued from almost certain destruction because of the dedication of the programs staff and directors.

Next week, we look forward to a visit from former FBI Agent Richard Schoeberl. Richard has over 16 years of counterintelligence, terrorism, and security management experience gleaned from his career with the National Counterterrorism Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His experience ranged from service as a field agent to leadership responsibilities in executive positions at FBI Headquarters and the NCTC.

Mr. Schoeberl serves as an on-air Counterterrorism and Law Enforcement media contributor to Fox News, PBS, NPR, Al-Jazeera Television, Al Arabiya Television, Al Hurra, and Sky News (Europe). He has worked and consulted with numerous foreign governments and intelligence agencies. He has extensive lecture experience at numerous conferences worldwide, and various institutions such as; London School of Economics & Political Science (London, United Kingdom) and the Middle East Institute (Washington, D.C.

Schoeberl is also an author for the Domestic Preparedness Journal and member of the DomPrep40, an interactive advisory board of insider practitioners and opinion leaders who have been asked by top officials to offer advice and recommendations on pertinent issues facing national security.

WELCOME

Today, we welcome and congratulate Union City Middle School’s Boys Basketball Team, Coaches Ron Ward, John Griggs, and their Cheerleaders, on a perfect 21-0 Season and the State Championship they won this past Saturday!!

Last week, President Houston opened the meeting with a brief history of Union City Rotary while also recognizing Bill Tanner, who has been a member of the club for 60 plus years. In his recap, he spoke of an Indigent Care Hospital in Memphis, which U.C. Rotary played a major part in during the early years of the club.

Then we took a trip to Russia, with the aid of a slide presentation by Dr. Mike Calfee. Mike recently returned from a mission trip to that country along with his daughter and good friend Paul Jackson, a professor at Union University.

Their trip took them to Orenburg Province, where he reported out of two million people in the province, there are only between six and eight hundred Protestant Christians, and only five churches there, so the purpose of their mission was to teach Christian Love and encourage the people of the province into Christianity and encourage more churches to be built in the area..

Their plane took them first to Moscow, where he reported they spent one day visiting some of the historical sights, such as Katherine The Great’s Summer Palace, which in the past few years has been renovated into a museum, and Red Square, which houses the Kremlin. Through the slide presentation we were able to view some of the beautiful architecture of the country along with many World War II Monuments, which he said there were about the only monuments they had.
