Building Communities - Bridging Continents
April 01, 2011
Today, we welcome Tom Hyde, President of Management Recruiters, an international executive recruiting firm, XM Solutions, a business incubator and software development fire, and a partner in Community Management Advisors, all based in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He and his team have filled executive positions for over 500 companies, primarily supporting foreign direct investment in the areas of automotive, life sciences and mobile technology.
He received his B.S. Degree in finance and International Business from UTM, programme diplomas from National Taiwan Nor University, Hirosaki University as one of UTM’s first pair of international exchange students, and Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he was the beneficiary of a Rotary Foundation Scholarship, and a M.A. Degree from International Christian University in Tokyo. During his university years, he formally studied Spanish, French, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Cantonese in addition to Malay, Korean, Italian & Portuguese.
Tom and his wife, Yukari, were married at the U. S. Embassy in Tokyo in 1987. They have 3 children, Erika-21, Alan-19 & Jim-17. As part of their commitment to Northwest TN, they established the Hyde Global Scholars Program to fund international education opportunities for the next generation of students at UTM. They have a similar private scholarship program for aspiring computer programmers at Middle TN St. University.
Tom has with him today a familiar face to everyone in this area, as Amy McAdoo, daughter of Dr. And Mrs Leland Davis and an employee of Tom’s accompanied him. Amy joined the firm in 2007, after receiving a B.S. Degree in Business Administration at Middle TN State University. Amy directs the marketing and branding efforts for the company and is responsible for the design and launch of electronic marketing presentations. She also spearheads the company’s researching efforts to maintain and build the database of potential clients and candidates as well as provide new information about industry expansions, mergers, and acquisitions.
Next week, Tennessee Commissioner of Financial Institutions Greg Gonzales will visit. Greg was sworn as the 18th commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Financial Institutions on January 20, 2007 by Governor Phil Bredesen and has served in the department since 1986.
In this position, Gonzales serves as Tennessee’s chief regulator officer of all state-chartered depository and licensed nondepository financial institutions. The department supervises approximately 12,000 financial institutions and companies doing business in Tennessee. Prior to being named commissioner, he served as acting commissioner beginning in December 2005. He previously served as assistant commissioner and general counsel. In his role as assistant commissioner, he was responsible for coordinating the provision of legal advice to the commissioner and department.
Gonzales was born in Cookville, TN. He received a bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Technological University in 1980, and earned a law degree from UT Knoxville in 1984.
Last week, Thursday, March 24 was Ladies Night for Union City Rotary, therefore there was no noon meeting on Friday.
The evening began with a social hour from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, after which a delicious meal was served on beautifully decorated tables, thanks to Michelle Creswell, Wife of President-Elect Al Creswell. Each table had a tall Crystal Vase Center Piece, accented with black, and filled with long stem red roses, the vases were surrounded with red cloth, and red rose petals. Each Lady present was presented with a rose. During the entire evening, music was provided by U.C.H.S. Graduate, Colby Watts on his Classical Guitar.
Two weeks ago, Missionary and member of the Mississippi River Ministry, Randy Pool visited leaving us with some amazing statistics. For instance, he pointed out that there are three economic levels in the United States, saying that as of 2007, the poverty level for a family of four in this country was $20,650.00. But as far a middle class, he said nobody knows how to define middle class, and at this time, nobody really knows how to define wealth.
He said, "it is not the amount of money one has or does not have, as to who has the advantage, it’s how you view the world". He then presented a quiz, asking do you feel you could survive in poverty, or could you survive in wealth. The quiz also related to skills you might not even realize you own, and how these skills could help in a crisis situation, helping you to survive in any given circumstance, and realizing one can learn how to make-do with what one has.
Another thing where middle class has the advantage he said was "we seem to have the tools on hand and know how to use these tools which we need to survive on a daily basis".
