Next week,
after recovering from a recent battle with gravel and a bicycle here in Obion County, our own State Senator and Fellow Rotarian Roy Herron returns for the May 28th program for an up-date on happenings on Capitol Hill in Nashville.
Besides being our State Senator for the past 22 years, Roy has an active law practice in Dresden, still helps manage the family’s farm, he is a former minister, and has taught for years at Vanderbilt University’s Law and Divinity Schools.
In the Senate he has chaired the Senate Democratic Caucus and committees dealing with health issues as well as children and youth. He has authored literally dozens of laws ranging from the Crime Victims’ Bill of Rights to the Student Religious Liberty Act, while only missing one legislative session in those 22 years, the day his youngest son was born.
Senator Herron has authored three books, including, Things Held Dear: Soul Stories for My Sons, Political Humor; Some of These Jokes You Voted For (with L.H. "Cotton" Ivy), and God and Politics: How Can a Christian Be in Politics?
After graduating from the University of Tennessee as Martin, Roy studied New Testament and ethics in Scotland at St. Andrews as a Rotary Scholar, then became one of Vanderbilt University’s first two joint divinity and law graduates.
Roy enjoys the outdoors, hunting, Scouting, and running with sons John, Rick, Ben, and his bride of 23 years, Nancy. Roy is a marathoner who has finished over 230 marathons, and has completed three 140.6 mile Ironman triathlons.
Two weeks ago, there was no meeting on Friday, but Rotarians were very busy on Thursday of that week hosting the 33rd Annual Rotary Relays, which by all standards was a huge success. (See Insert).
Last week, marked another successful milestone in Union City Rotary History, as The Award Winning Union City Rotary Scholarship Banquet was held at First Baptist Family Life Center, hosting students and educators from Union City High School, South Fulton High School, and Obion County Central High School, representing all three high schools in our county.
Following several weeks of accepting applications, screening interviews, and making their final selections, our scholarship committee, along with Union City Mayor and U.C. Rotary Member Terry Hailey handed out $129,500.00 in scholarship moneys to 119 students representing high school graduates, along with students already enrolled in an accredited university, college or trade school.
Totals were up again this year, in spite of witnessing even a greater sluggish economy over last year. In 2010 Business and individuals from Obion County, along with the $28,000,00 from interest on endowments, were able to distribute $128,000.00. Checking the numbers, the program has had a steady gain since it’s beginning.
June 3rd brings on yet another astounding accomplishment for the club, on that day, the Verhine Scholarship Program unfolds, adding an additional $143,500.00 toward educating the youth of Union City High School. This trust was set up several years ago by the Verhine Estate, which is solely set aside for upper classmen in qualified colleges, universities and technical schools who are graduates of Union City High Schools.
This year brings the grand total of dollars distributed through the two program to $3,586,535, going to 2700 local students.
