Today, Union City Rotary ends another year. It has been a very successful year for our club, marking a banner year as far as the number of projects the club has taken on with a very successful ending to them all. We broke records with the Scholarship Programs, successful Youth Travel Programs, had a huge turnout for the Speakers Banquet, the Rotary Relays were a huge success, and a record year as far as new memberships are concerned, with a total of 17 new members, overcoming the loss of a few, and ending with a with a net gain of 6 members.
As we install new officers today, we extend a warm welcome to Former District Governor, Glen Vanderford. Glen has visited our club on several occasions, receiving this e-mail from Glen, he had this to say. "I look forward in coming to U.C. Rotary Friday to celebrate a most successful year. I am always thrilled to see the vast amount of service rendered to your community by the members of Union City Rotary Club. I hope I can express the feeling on many Rotarians throughout our district of the excellent work that is being done by your members in the areas of TRF, Literacy, New Generations (Youth Program) as well as the fantastic Scholarship Program".
Glen was the Territory Sales Manager for 32 years with Mead Johnson Nutritionals of Evansville, India, a Bristol Myers Squibb company. He is a native of Memphis, and graduated from Lambuth University in Jackson with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
A Charter Member of the Jackson Old Hickory Rotary Club that was established in 1979. He has served as Director, Treasurer, and President and chaired various committes. He has 32 years of perfect attendance and is a Paul Harris Fellow (Major Donor). He was Assistant Governor for ten District Governors. Glen completed the Rotary Leadership Training Academy in 2000-2001. He now serves Roptary at the Zone level as TRF ARRFC Assistant Retional Rotary Coordinator for Zone 30 assigned to D6710, 6760 and 6800.
Glen and his wife Beth have two daughters, Ellen (Nathan) and Meridith (Shane) and three grandchildren Aiden, Weston and Emily Katherine.
Next week, Union City Rotary will not meet, due to the Holiday.
EVERYONE HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY 4th OF JULY!!
Last week, President Houston announced the possibility of Union City Rotary gaining two more new members, as he announced Mike Hutchens had been approved by the membership, and Tyler Barker was going before the membership for their approval.
Josh Owens, a native of Union City and recipient of multiple Union City Rotary Scholarships was on hand as guest speaker. Josh brought with him a slide presentation showing graphics of his work in Sudan, where he was involved with an effort to establish economic resources there in order that the depressed area could live a better life.
He spoke of the poor agriculture conditions there, due to the natives farming a parcel of land without replenishing nutrients to the ground, therefore they just farmed the parcel until it was completely worn out and just moved on to another area. As always, this brings on competition over land, frustration set in, leadership was blamed, therefore a militia was formed and the country split, he reported.
After much deliberation on the groups part, they decided the best way to handle the situation was to teach the people how to take care of the land, therefore reducing the hostility between the two groups.
He explained how they picked a few people from the area teaching them, among other things, how to care for the land and how to keep it fertile, therefore reducing hostilities and bringing some peace to the country.
He used this as a comparison to Northwest Tennessee, saying that it is now reported that 83.7% of the population in the U.S. are living in urban areas, regionalism has taken over in order to attract more industry and competition is ramped. There is also an effort to keep youth closer to their home, after they are grown, therefore reducing this transfer to urban areas and slow the draining of the economy in rural areas.
