This is the 16th year for the Youth Musical at the award-winning fair. Bill has directed the show since 2000. Bring your foot tapping shoes next week!
Amy Thweatt Promotes Stroke Awareness
Last week, Rotarians heard as Amy Thweatt, Senior Health Service Coordinator for Life Line Screening of West Tennessee discussed strokes and how four simple and painless tests can help determine if you are a “high risk” candidate for stroke. “It’s the third leading cause of death in the country,” Amy said. “It’s right behind heart attacks and cancer as the leading killers in America. And, it’s the number one reason people are admitted to nursing homes.” Needless to say, a long line of Rotarians signed up for a special day of testing—Sept 11th—at First United Methodist Church, after Amy’s talk. The four tests include: 1)-Stroke Screening/Carotid Artery: This screens the carotid arteries in the neck for plaque buildup. The #1 cause of stroke is linked to carotid artery blockage. 2)-Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screen: This screens for the esistence of an aneurysm in the abdominal aorta. The vast majority of people who have aneurysm have no symptoms. 3)-Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening: This screens for peripheral arterial disease (plaque buildup) in the lower extremities which is linked to coronary artery disease. 4)-Osteoporosis: This screens for abnormal bone mass density in men and women. Osteoporosis is painless and silent in its early stages. “We do about 60,000 screenings per month,” Amy said. “In May alone, we identified 103 patients with “life-threatening” issues because they submitted to our four easy screenings.” None of the 103 people had a clue they were “walking time bombs.” Thanks Amy for a very informative program.
